A Kind Of Hush.

Everyone that noticed, stopped what they were doing and looked up towards the sky. Others joined in when they saw so many people looking up.

It really was a spectacular sight. Meteorites passing across the sky in some kind of picturesque ballet. One would sweep across the sky in a glow of orange light, to be followed by another and another.

A kind of hush descended over the watchers. Nobody spoke; not a word. It was as though they were struck dumb by the beauty....or was it the totally unexpected shock.

For the beauty did not last and neither did the hush. When the first rock struck the ground and sent a juddering resonating out from it, that’s when the onlookers realized the beauty came with danger.

Glass shattered, buildings began to crumble, to fall apart in lumps of concrete, to topple to the ground. The quiet was broken by screams, by panic. Everyone fled but there was nowhere safe to flee to.

The destruction was all encompassing, there was nowhere to escape. Even the underground entrances were blocked, and huge craters formed above the tunnels.

The panic did not last long and through the smoke the hush descended again.
