This was a script I wrote a few years ago, and I got funding, but I could not pull a crew together. At this point, I decided to give up on film making which I'd been working in for a decade. I
struggle with inter personal relations, and this script is a segment of my life (but embellished).

PARENT'S HOUSE - EVENING
GOTLIEB (17-30yo), JOHN(40-60yo), and JUDIE (40-60yo) are sitting at a table eating in a middle-upper class suburban house. It is quiet, everyone is looking down at their food, with only clanking of utensils.
Gotlieb takes a large serving spoon of potato mash, and as he is about to put it on his plate -
JUDIE
Because-
Judie is cut off by Gotlieb slamming the spoonful on his
plate and angrily saying -
GOTLIEB
NO!.. You sound like a politician
with pre-formed ideas about how
everyone should only share in their
ideals. It has to be equal for
everyone!
JUDIE
NO, It's the definition! (Gotlieb
sighs) Don't! I'll get my say, the
law defines it as between a man and
woman, and you can't just change
definitions.
GOTLIEB
YES! (big chopping hand gesture)
meanings of words change all the
time! "Cool" added to its
definition, hell, even gay changed!
That's just an excuse!
JOHN
The government defines it as man
and woman! It has always been that,
and I don't want my marriage
invalidated because they want what
they don't need. And that's all it
is, just a want.
GOTLIEB
Are you serious? I'm not gay, and I
realise that it's not ACTUALLY
going to effect straight people,
and by your reasoning, don't NEED
an opinion on it!
JUDIE
LOOK! Your generation can do what
ever you want when we're all dead
and gone. Then it wont effect us.
Gotlieb sits back, looks down into nothingness, pauses for a few seconds. Gotlieb puts down his fork.
GOTLIEB
Alright, I'm done. (Gotlieb stands
up and walks towards the front
door)
JUDIE
Is that how you deal with things?
Gotlieb slams the door behind him.
Gotlieb get into his car, and puts his seat belt on angrily, as he turns the key on for the car, tears start falling down his face.
Gotlieb drives away. After a few seconds, he grips the steering wheel tightly, shakes himself back and fourth into the seat, and starts yelling in frustration.

JESSIE'S HOUSE - LATER

JESSIE opens the front door in a robe, Gotlieb stands in the same spot, looking down and whimpering. Jessie puts his arm around Gotlieb and corrals him inside. Jessie turns, closes the door, turns back, and kisses Gotlieb on the lips.
Jessie puts their foreheads together.
JESSIE
Telling them you're not gay is
lying by omission.
Gotlieb turns and sits on the couch.
GOTLIEB
I want them to be okay with it, not
possibly changing their minds out
of obligation.
Jessie sits with one foot tucked under himself. Jessie puts his elbow behind him on top of the couch, and plays (onehanded) with Gotlieb's hair.
GOTLIEB
They are all about their own
definitions, and I'm not
technically gay, so fuck them.
JESSIE
Still with the hiding their bigotry
behind definitions?
Gotlieb stands up hastily, (facing away from Jessie) puts his head in his hands, then grabs a nearby object and throws it against a wall. Gotlieb looks over to a child sleeping in a near room.
GOTLIEB
They passed their hate onto me as a
kid.
Jessie rests his head in the hand he was using on Gotlieb's hair (specifically doesn't pay attention to the throwing).
GOTLIEB
When I was a kid, they used to make
fun of a gay neighbor, by saying.
Gotlieb relaxes and closes the door.

PARENT'S HOUSE - FLASH BACK

Gotlieb is young, in a group of males, including a younger John. John covers his face with his beer, and mumbles -
JOHN
Back's against the walls boys,
stephen's here.
Gotlieb and a few other younger kids, run laughing and put their backs to a wall.
STEPHEN walks up, and John shakes his hand.

JESSIE'S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

Gotlieb is slowly wondering through the house. fiddling with objects.
JESSIE
You were a kid, you can't be held
accountable
Gotlieb sniffs audably over Jessie speaking, Jessie pauses, and continues in the same breath
because you'd only been exposed to
that.
Gotlieb stops and leans in a doorway with a bed in the room, Gotlieb turns the switch off, and moves into the dark room.
Jessie grins, flops his head down, pauses for a few seconds, gets up and walks across the room.
