This is a short story that I wrote recently. I wanted to take an idea for a whole story I had thought up and condense it into a moment. A story that describes a short situation in-depth as if that
situation was part of a much larger tale.

The sound of Liam’s breath echoed off of the hospital walls. The sweat forming in his palm loosened his grip on the pistol. Bare feet clap against the marble floor as he methodically checked each ruined hospital room. The metallic scent of blood filled the hallway.

Rubber boots suddenly squeaked up the staircase at the end of Liam’s vision. Under the slim beam of light that warmed the grey floor stood fear itself, and fear was armed with an assault rifle. The subtle sound of filtered breathing entered the atmosphere. The dim reflection of a massacre stared back at Liam through Fear’s lense. He broke out into a cold sweat, his face filled up with warm blood and he choked on hesitation. A thin strip of light outlined the man’s rifle as it rose to meet Liam’s panicked heart.

In an instant, the confrontation was over. In three snaps of God’s fingers, a life had vanished and another was dwindling. Liam held his bleeding heart and leaned against a cold wall. Fear lied still in the slim beam of light, a pool of darkness growing under him. More boots. Liam paid no mind. The footsteps grew louder and simultaneously a light crept along with them. Brighter and brighter until the light was pointed directly at Liam’s forehead, accompanied by the cold, circular imprint of a barrel. It was close enough to hear his whisper carried by the vessel of his last breath.

“Lumen.”

Snap.
