Ready For Work

He pushes open the door and steps inside, rubbing his hands together against the cold. It is warm in the room, especially in the seat by the fire. He sits down, leans forward and lets the warmth wash over him, thawing him out and, for now, banishing the icy cold.

She bustles her way over to him and hands him a cup of hot, steaming cocoa. Gratefully, he wraps his hands around the cup, lifts it to his lips and takes a sip. Warmed up now from the inside as well as the out, he is ready to make his last minute preparations. His vehicle is all polished and ready to go so now he can kick off his work boots, sit back and allow himself to relax for a few minutes.

He takes a moment to appreciate his wife’s consideration, for she has hung his uniform up to warm, to air out. It will be a pleasure to put it on. He undoes his pants, steps into the waiting ones, loose right now so he needs his braces to hold them up. He leans forward and gives his black boots a last polish with a soft cloth and is rewarded by their shine.

She comes back into the room and takes his jacket from him, helps him into it, then stands back and makes her inspection. “You’ll do,” she says, then steps in to his held out arms.

“A lot of work to do tonight, my dear,” he says.

“Oh, you’ll cope. You always do! Try not to eat too much; remember last year when you came home with such indigestion.”

He smiles. “I’ll try not to. But it would be rude to refuse so....we’ll see. I expect I’ll be gone for most of the night, so don’t wait up.”

“I won’t. See you when you finish work, Nick.” She leans forward and gives him a gentle kiss on the lips.

“See you soon, Mrs Claus,” he says, then heads off out of the door, shutting it quickly to keep the heat inside.
