Prometheus’ Garden

Episode 21

18/12/2017

FADE IN:

Zoom in on crime scene from an overhead shot as police sirens circle in red and blue. As we approach, we realize that we are at the asylum last seen at the end of the previous episode. Rain drops down as it gently plops when it reaches the end of its spiral.

EXT. ASYLUM, ENTRANCE – NIGHT

A sign is stacked against the brick labelled “Gottfried’s Hospital for the Mentally Disturbed.” CUT TO:

INT. ASYLUM, THERAPY ROOM – NIGHT

Dr. Gottfried adjusts his glasses as he prepares his evaluation. On the chair sits Asenath, her hands and feet bound. There is a charming, though disturbing smile, on her face. He seems used to it by this point.

GOTTFRIED

Hello, Asenath. How are we today?

ASENATH

Oh, nothing much, Doc. Your little boy Willy’s not doing fine, though.

GOTTFRIED

William? What’s wrong with him?

ASENATH

Oh, nothing much! It’s just when I went to say hi to him, he just jumped back.

GOTTFRIED

…How did you say hello to him?

ASENATH

Just tilted my head to his direction and went “BOO!” as loud as possible, Doc! Oh, you should have seen the look on his face!

GOTTFRIED

I imagine it was amusing?

ASENATH

Amusing? Priceless!

GOTTFRIED

I see.

(beat)

Well, shall we begin?

ASENATH

It’s your show, Doc. Do as you wish.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. ASYLUM, CELL – NIGHT

She sits on her bed, hopping up and down as she stares at nothing in particular, and her smile still intact as she bites of her fingers. CUT TO:

INT. ASYLUM, ROOM – DAY

Most of the patients are gathered, with the ones talking hikes outside are accompanied by gentle and patient nurses. Asenath is on the couch, crouched on it as she watches the TV, where there is footage of Sol committing another rescue.

ASENATH

Too epic.

Hey, Dosteovsky! Would you switch the channel?

GUARD

Quiet, Asenath.

She scowls and sticks her tongue out at him. Then, she tips on her toes and heads towards him.

ASENATH

How’s the wife and kids, buddy?

The guard stays distant, trying not to respond.

ASENATH

You know, if they ever feel like coming here, you know who to call. I could use some roommates. Oh, it’d be so fun! We could share an upper and lower bed, and…

GUARD

I said shut up.

She chuckles and waves at him as she walks away, twirling about.  She looks around and spots a bulky Mexican, almost like a giant. She walks up to him.

ASENATH

Hey, Del Toro!

He turns his head towards her.

ASENATH

(sits next to him)

Level with me, big guy. I’ve been watching you these past few weeks. You’ve got nothing to say, you’ve got nothing to show. That’s a bad design, by the way. Means that sooner or later, somebody’s gonna try to make you his little bitch.

DIEGO

This is a hospital, not a prison.

ASENATH

Oh, sure, but when the good doctor’s not around, some of the boys and gals sneak off to see the sunshine and smell the fresh air, if you know what I mean.

DIEGO

What do you want?

ASENATH

C’mon, would having a friend hurt, big guy?

DIEGO

I don’t need your friendship. I know about you.

ASENATH

Oh! And what do they say?

DIEGO

(pause)

Why bother?

ASENATH

Smart man.

(beat)

Well, then, what was it that brought little Diego here?

DIEGO

(thrown off)

How did you know my name?

ASENATH

Why bother?

The bell rings, and all inmate are requested into their cells.

INT. ASYLUM, THERAPY ROOM – NIGHT

GOTTFRIED

Now, then, Asenath, we’re going to try some wordplay.

ASENATH

Oh, that’s one of my favorites! Go on, go on!

GOTTFRIED

Pearl.

ASENATH

Mother.

GOTTFRIED

Gun.

ASENATH

Ouch.

GOTTFRIED

(sighs)

Fate.

ASENATH

Sicarius.

GOTTFRIED

Sicarius?

ASENATH

Oh, yes, Doctor. You’ve seen his stuff, right?

GOTTFRIED

I’m afraid I have.

ASENATH

Take it you’re not a fan.

GOTTFRIED

No, I don’t.

ASENATH

Neither am I. He’s so – rigid. So stiff, so angry all the time. Even the getup of his is a joke, and he’s clearly not in on it!

GOTTFRIED

And that is you’re problem with him?

ASENATH

Don’t much care for that sun girl he moans about, nor for that matter the Mexican robot boy, but if you look closely, if you just link the pieces together, you can find the second message, the important message. You can find the spot that might save us all, that might finally open the mysteries we have closed off for so long.

GOTTFRIED

And what would that message be?

ASENATH

Sometimes, you’ve just got to smile.

(widens her smile)

GOTTFRIED

Um…well, I suppose that is it for today.

ASENATH

Yes, sir!

Lights blink out to black.

INT. ASYLUM, CELL – NIGHT

A sleeping Diego is attacked by two guards. One holds him from the back, the other unleashes blows on him.

GUARD

How does it feel?! How does it feel, Freak?!

DIEGO

You…

GUARD

You like what you’ve done to Emily? You wanna know how it feels?!

The man’s head is then bashed by a fire extinguisher, yielded by Anestha.

ANESTHA

Shame on you, boys! That’s not how you pummel a person!

Here, let me show you!

She unleashes on the other, bashing him to a bloody pulp while Diego recovers.

DIEGO

What the hell was his problem?!

ANESTHA

Oh, that’s just Thomas Jefferson.

DIEGO

(muses)

Jefferson…

ANESTHA

(leans against the cell door)

So, how long have you and his wife known each other?

He looks at her in defeat, and rises.

DIEGO

You’ll know everything tomorrow. Now, get out.

ANESTHA

You’re welcome!

She leaves, striking a pose for him before she moves on. He sighs and sits on the bed, his head in his hands.

INT. ASYLUM, ROOM – DAY

They sit in a corner, pretending to watch a poker game.

DIEGO

Not all of Father Borg’s followers disappeared, as they like to say. Some of us did get out of there when Cthulhu arrived. At best, we’d have lost some limbs, if we hadn’t just geographically moved out of the way.

ANESTHA

So there’s a chance that some of your pals are here.

DIEGO

Possibly. They also forgot one more detail. Or kept it from the public, possibly.

During the outbreak, when people were afflicted by the nightmares, Borg’s followers also experienced the episode. At least, that’s what I think. I was standing there, keeping guard, when I can no longer remember what happened. Next thing you know, I’m in a room filled with corpses of a woman and children.

ASENTHA

Ouch.

DIEGO

Don’t mock me, clown. I don’t take it lightly.

ASENTHA

No kidding.

So, why were you in the Cthulhu Club in the first place?

DIEGO

Father Borg helped me a long time ago. I was an animal on the streets, and yet he offered his hand to me. Showed the way the world works. Showed the way things ought to be. The least I could do is repay him, whatever the cost.

ASENTHA

Y’know what, big guy? I like you. Sure, you’re dark, broody, and could use a shower, but I like you, nonetheless.

DIEGO

Get to the point. What do you want from me?

ASENTHA

Well, I just wanted to invite you to my party. It’ll be fun, all games and explosions and carnival rides, with me as your host. The special desert would be some people we’d like to have a talk with.

DIEGO

And what makes you think we can get to them?

ASENTHA

I’d explain, but it’d take seven years. You see, when I got exposed to my inner life, I found – answers. Answers that explained everything. I’m sure you had your epiphanies.

What I’m trying to say is, we both know what we want out of this life, we know what the world is like, and we want others to see the same things we witnessed with our bare eyes. We can get what we both want. I get to have my fun, and you get to continue Father Borg’s work.

After all, you owe him.

Pause.

DIEGO

How do you plan to get us out?

She nods at a dwarf who is winning the poker game.

ASENATH

Charlie and I had a chat. He’ll know what to do. Tomorrow night, 8:00 PM.

She walks towards the nurse behind the counter.

ASENATH

Ruby, darling, can I have some makeup? After all, a pretty girl has to look after herself.

RUTH

(whispers)

Drop dead.

ASENATH

(casually)

Sure, sure.

Diego watches her as she walks off, bewildered by this strange individual.

CUT TO:

INT. ASYLUM, FRONT DESK – NIGHT

The Guard whistles his way to the front desk, where lies a wrapped gift.

“Happy birthday, Jacques.”

CUT TO:

INT. ASYLUM, GOTTFRIED’S OFFICE – NIGHT

Gottfried is filling some files when he is knocked out by an explosion.

POV shot as he looks about and finds Asentha face to face with him.

ASENTHA

Hey, Doc!

(pulls out a knife)

Merry Christmas!

In several corners, guards are being attacked, inmates are being let out, nurses are getting raped, and most of them jump out of the hole.

ASENATH

(rushing with a bloodstained knife in hand)

Wait for me!

(stops)

Wait, I’m sure I forgot something.

(sees the hanged corpse of Ruth)

Ah!

(takes her makeup appliances form her pocket and adjusts her face)

Alright, I’m ready!

Look out, world! Here I come!

Jumps through the hole, howling in laughter as we cut to black.

The End
