Gorillas are large apes that are native to Africa. The mountain gorilla lives in the mountainous regions of central africa while the lowland gorilla lives in the flat dense forest of central and western Africa.

Mountain gorillas who live in the virunga mountains of east central Africa are the most endangered of the three subspecies and are seriously threatened by the possibility of extinction. There are less than 790 of them left in the world and they can only exist in the wild.

Gorillas stick to their mainly vegetarian diet feeding on stems and bamboo shoots and fruits western lowland gorillas however also have an appetite for termites and ants and break open termite nest to eat the larvae.

Offspring. Like humans, female gorillas are pregnant for nine months and usually give birth to only one infant at a time. Newborn gorillas weigh about (1.8 kg). From the time they're about 4 months to 2 or 3 years old, young gorillas ride on their mothers' backs as a form of transportation.

"Koko" is a female western lowland gorilla. who is known for having learned a large number of hand signs from a modified version of American sign.
