Shawn has abandoned his family and the love of his life for two years because of a family secret. What will this Christmas bring?

I've spent the last two holidays of my life away from my family back in North Carolina. Away from the lies, betrayal, and he secrets. These years have seemed even

longer without the love of my life, Nia. The day I packed my things and my life up to leave for New York, I also left behind my girlfriend at the time. To make it even worse,

I left without saying goodbye. I'm sure she'll never forgive me.

I tried to reach Nia shortly after I left via mail but she never responded. My letter to her stated that I wasn't ready for commitment and that I was truly sorry for breaking

my promises.

I've moved on since then so I don't think about it much. Robin is my new love and we've been dating for almost a year. She and I met through a mutual friend. He's also

the friend that took me in when I moved to New York two years ago. He grew tired of me moping around about Nia so thought it would be best for me to meet someone

new. Robin and I connected instantly actually. Ironically, she grew up in North Carolina as well and her family lived close to the town that I lived most of my life. Sadly,

she reminded me of Nia in a way with her love for Christmas.

I'm not sure why I didn't see this conversation coming from a mile away. Robin is very family oriented and she had been hinting at us meeting each other's family for a few months now.

"Shawn! What's so wrong with me wanting us to meet each other's family for Christmas?" Robin yells to me as she is placing the last ornament on the tree. "I think this is the perfect time."

I grab my coffee and prepare to walk out the door for work. "Baby, it's our first Christmas together and I rather spend it here." I've never told her my issues with my family

or why I haven't been back home in two years.

She looks so cute when she pouts. Robin walks over to me in her fitted red onesie and her hair pinned in a messy bun. She was drop dead gorgeous. I didn't want to

disappoint her by saying no, so I gave in to going home for the holidays this year...and the fact that she whispered in my ear the sweet reward I would get from her for doing so.

"You're lucky I love you woman." I kiss her and rush out for another work day. Knots start to develop in my stomach when I realize that I now have to face my family once

and for all and possibly the woman I hurt long ago. I'll be home for Christmas.

My friend Dana will twerk to anything at anytime. I was in the middle of making some Christmas cookies when she almost knocked me down. She is obviously excited

about something or has something interesting to tell me hence the twerking on my leg. I open the oven and place twelve raw cookies inside. Staring at her until she just

couldn't take it any longer, she brings the twerking to an end. Dana hops up on the bar stool in my kitchen and begins to explain whats going on.

"Nia, my best friend in the whole wide world, I have some news to disclose to you and I think you should have a seat."

"What? Dana, whats wrong?" I ask concerned. My heart dropped a little.

"Girl chill, it's nothing bad, Dana laughed. Just relax. I just thought you should know that Shawn is coming home for Christmas this year from what I hear." Nia looked like

she wanted to vomit. She hadn't heard from Shawn since he up and left years ago. Yes, he had wrote a letter to explain things, but it just wasn't enough.

She had never stopped loving Shawn and honestly didn't think it was possible. He was the only guy that she could picture herself one day marrying and starting a family

Noticing Nia popping her knuckles, Dana placed her hands over Nia's and just held them. She knew this topic made Nia feel a way because she only popped her

knuckles when something made her nervous or uneasy.

"Hey Ni." My close friends and family called me Ni for short.  "I'm sorry to put it on you like that. I thought you'd be excited to finally be able to see him again."

I rolled my eyes. "You do know this is the same man that left me right?" I removed my hands from hers and stood up. "You of all people knew how hurt I was over him

and I thought I was finally getting over it."

I sat back down and glared at Dana. "And how do you know this anyway?"

"His dad told my mom and pretty much everyone in town. Word is Shawn hasn't been back here since he left; not even for Christmas."

"Wow. That's a little extreme, but oh well." I could care less at this point.

Truthfully, Nia hadn't been happy with any other man since Shawn. She had tried dating guys but it never bloomed into anything serious. Although he hurt her, she still

couldn't seem to get him out her system fully, no matter how much she says she's over him. The love she had in her heart for him was indescribable. He was the only for

her. The thing she struggled with the most was why did he leave her the way he did. What they had together was great. When they were together, she had promised that

she would love and cherish him forever and bear him with kids. He promised that he would marry her, adore her, and be the best man he could be to her. Forever came

sooner than Nia wanted it to.

Growing tired of discussing Shawn and forgetting the cookies that she had placed in the oven, Nia jumped when the smoke alarm went off.

"Oh snap!" Nia grabbed the oven mitts and ran to oven. When she opened it, smoke rushed in her face and she raised her arm up to cover her face.

Pulling out a pan of black, crispy cookies, Nia looked at Dana and shooked her head. "He's not even here yet and is already causing problems."

It is now two days until Christmas and I still haven't managed to call my parents to let them know that I was finally coming home for the holidays. I know that they'll be

thrilled but it doesn't change the fact that they kept this secret from me all of my life. Robin and I are packed and ready to leave out on tomorrow morning and she's so

excited to meet my family and for me to meet hers. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be going back, not right now anyway.

I watched Robin wrap the last of the gifts for her family. As she finished up, my mind drifted on Nia. I loved Robin but I still had a soft spot in my heart for Nia. I wondered

how she was doing. Was she in another relationship or married? Oh my! What if she had kids now. I remembered when she made the promise to carry mine. If there is

any truth to my thoughts, I know that the faults mine. I left. I broke my promise to her.

Breaking my thoughts, Robin hopped in my lap, laying a wet kiss on my cheek. "Hey baby. What has you in a daze over here?" I now felt guilty for being in deep thought

of my ex girlfriend while my current girlfriend was only a feet away. I ran my fingers through Robin's long, black curls and kissed her passionately on the lips.

"I was just thinking of how lucky I am to have you Beautiful." I lied.

"Wow, someone is in a great mood. What did I do to deserve this?" she teased.

"What!? I always treat you like this Robin."

"Yeah that's true, but that kiss just felt..." Robin twisted her mouth and looked up searching for the words. "It felt more loving, more passionate. It's as if you were kissing someone else."

Shawn stared at her for a few seconds, but ignored the comment. He hadn't shared his past relationship with her and didn't want to. He then motioned for her to get up

from his lap so that he could call his dad.

"Umm, hey Dad...uh sorry, Will," Shawn stumbled not sure how to properly address his dad.

"Shawn, no matter the circumstances, I'm still your father. It's good to hear your voice again. To what do I owe this phone call?"

Shawn paused for a minute before answering. "I uh, wanted to let you know that I will be coming home for Christmas this year."

"That's good to hear Sha-!"

"And I'll be bringing my girlfriend," Shawn said interrupting his dad.

"Girlfriend? Oh. Well, I can't wait to meet her. See you soon."

"Before you go, I'm ready to have that conversation with both of you about that night," Shawn said hesitantly.

"Okay son. We're here to answer any questions you may have. I'm still sorry you had to find out that way. We love you."

They disconnected the call and Shawn felt some relief after all this time. He returned to the living room where Robin was and he snuggled next to her on the couch. It

was pretty cold in the city that night and snow had began to fall. Robin had set the mood before Shawn came in by making some spiked hot chocolate, lighting the

fireplace, and turning on the Christmas tree. They finished the night off by watching the famous Christmas movie, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas". After the movie

was over, the two of them fell asleep on the couch and the next morning they were headed to North Carolina.

Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year. I love everything about it. From the Christmas lights, to the Christmas music, down to the eggnog...spiked and

cookies, and most importantly, the love being spread. It's the time of year for miracles and for lovers to fall deeper in love in my opinion.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that I volunteered at this year's Christmas Festival to make cookies and to pass them out along with some eggnog...not spiked. I

thought about the Christmas cookies I burned the other day when I heard about Shawn. They were only a practice batch so it didn't bother me too much. The fact that he

was coming did bother me. I wondered if he would even reach out to me or if he had moved on. I don't like to admit it, but I still love him.

"Nia, Christmas Eve is tomorrow and I don't smell any cookies dear," my mother said to me while looking in the oven.

"I'm about to get to it right now mama. I've just been a little busy."

"Well you promised to serve delicious cookies at the Christmas Festival tomorrow so don't rush it and please make sure they're good. I wouldn't want anyone laughing at my baby", my mom joked.

"That's one thing you'll never have to worry about because I'm a beast when it comes to baking. You better act like you know." I gathered all my supplies for my famous

Creme Brulee Sugar Cookies. I only made them during the holiday season. Shawn used to love them.

"Okay sweetie. I know you have a lot of pressure now, so if you need help, let me know.

Confused as to why she feels I'm under pressure, I scrunched my face and asked what she meant by that.

"Well, I heard that Shawn was coming into town from his dad..and before you say you don't care, remember I know you."

"Mom, I'm okay really. What we had is over and I hope he's happy."

"Whatever you say Ni, but I know you still love him and that's okay too. No other man has had a chance to even get close to your heart." She picked up her mug of

french vanilla coffee and looked me in the eyes. "And they never will."

As my mom walked out, I tried to ignore her last comment. It's true though. I wouldn't let another guy close to me, no matter how good of a person they were. Shawn

holds the key to my heart.

Chistmas Eve (The day of the Christmas Festival) Nia's Version

Completely satisfied with how my cookies came out, I rushed to put on my sparkling red dress and black pumps for the Christmas festival. I wore my hair down and

finished my face off with some red lipstick. Perfect.

It was finally Christmas Eve and for some reason I felt joy in my heart. The whole town was expected to be at the festival this year. This was the first time the town came

together to do something like this for Christmas and I thought it was brilliant! Dana had offered to drive us tonight since I had so many cookies to carry.

"Girl! I'm so ready for the festivities tonight!" Dana said to me in her ratchet voice as she searched for something good to play on the car's radio. She stopped on TLC's

"Have a Very Merry Christmas" and we both sang along and danced.

"So am I Dana! Something about tonight just feels so right." Nia was glowing as she spoke.

"Ni, I feel you girl and you are looking like a snack! You may find a handsome fella tonight looking how you looking." They laughed and Nia freshened up her lipstick.

"Thanks friend and you look good too girl. Let me also remind you that this is a family event so no twerking tonight to these Christmas songs." Dana gave Nia the side

eye and pushed her softly on the shoulders.

"No worries. I'll be two stepping all night mother." Dana said jokingly to Nia.

When they arrived to the festival, there were people everywhere with Christmas hats and Christmas sweaters on. The decorations were beautiful and everyone seemed

happy and cheerful. This is what Nia loved about Christmas.

They walked over to the booth where Nia would be passing out the cookies and eggnog. Before she could set up properly, people were already lining up to get her

famous cookies. Nia worked in a bakery in town so she was well known for her tasty treats.

An hour had passed and the festival had only become fuller. Nia and Dana were really enjoying themselves. They took a break from the booth and danced some and

although Nia's cookies were the best, they still went to other booths to taste their treats.

"Hey there Nia, how have you been?" Nia turned around and saw Shawn's dad. She put her hair behind her ear and walked over to him.

"Hi Mr. Will. It's nice to see you."

"Likewise young lady. You look amazing in your red." Nia suddenly felt sick of her stomach. She figured that Shawn could be close by but she didn't ask.

"Thanks Mr. Will. Be sure to come by my booth to get some cookies."

"I most certainly will Nia. My son always talked about how good they were." She smiled and nodded, then she and Dana turned and walked back to her booth.

"You don't look so good Ni, are you okay?" Dana asked concerned.

"Oh yeah, I'm good. I just haven't spoke with Mr. Will since Shawn left. He didn't even mention him."

"Then he may not even be here so there is nothing to worry about Ni."

"Yeah. Maybe you're right."

"Ugh, this ride is so draining," Robin whined. "Remind me again why we didn't fly?"

Shawn chuckled at Robin. "Well my dear, it was you that said that a road trip would be perfect for us, and we kind of waited til the last minute to decide to go. Plane

tickets are expensive right now."

"Never listen to me again." Robin pleaded. "How much longer do we have?"

"Just one more hour honey."

One hour had passed and Robin and I had made it to NC. I wanted to have the talk with my dad and uncle before introducing Robin so I dropped her off at

her famiy's home and promised I would pick her up later.

As I pulled into my parent's yard, I felt nervous. I thought back to the last Christmas I was here and my Uncle Rob accidentally exposed the secret.

Uncle Rob: Shawn, this right here will put some hair on your chest. You gotta drank this slowly.

Shawn: *Chuckles* I'm all man now Unc. I think I can handle this.

Will: That's right! My boy is a manly man. I raised him right and pretty soon he's going to make that beautiful girlfriend of his, his wife. Watch what I tell ya.

Shawn: Well Dad, I plan to. You and mom have been a great example of what a real marriage looks like.

Uncle Rob: Yeah I admire your marriage big bro. I'm glad that you guys raised Shawn for me. You will never know how much I appre-.

Shawn: Say what? What do you mean raised me? For you?

Will: Oh man, Shawn. I'm sorry. Rob, I think you've had enough to drink for tonight. Listen son, we were trying to find the perfect time to tell you this but never could find it.

Shawn put his glass down.

Shawn: I'm listening.

Uncle Rob: Let me tell him since this is my fault. Shawn, when you were born, I had a lot going on in my life and I asked Will and his wife to adopt you. I'm your biological fath-.

Before my Uncle Rob could finish his explanation, I flipped the table over and walked out.

That was the last time I saw my uncle and dad. I still kept in contact with my mom, not knowing what part she played in this secret. I couldn't just stop speaking to her.

She's my mom, no matter what. I did not stick around long enough to hear what my biological father had to say that night, but today I was ready to listen.

I stepped onto the porch and rang the doorbell. My mom greeted me with a big hug and closed the door behind me.

"Hi Mom. You look beautiful."

"Aww, thanks baby, you're looking handsome yourself. I'm so happy you finally came home!"

"Thanks. So, where is Dad and Uncle Rob? We're supposed to have that talk."

"There in the basement waiting for you, and Shawn..I know this is hard and I hate you had to find out this way. Just do your mom a favor, and listen to what your uncle

has to say. I love you." I kissed my mother on the cheek and made my way downstairs.

I walked in and saw my dad and Uncle Rob sitting at the bar and having a drink. When they heard me come in, they both stood up and motioned for me to have a seat.

Uncle Rob poured me a drink and we began to talk.

"Shawn, I first want to say that I'm sorry for not telling you this sooner. This decision was made so that you would be taken care of properly. Although you're not mine

biologically, you are still my son and I love you.

I didn't say anything. I took a sip of my drink and waited for my Uncle Rob, my biological father to say something.

Before Uncle Rob spoke, he shotted back his drink. "Shawn, the night you were born, I wasn't in the best position financially or mentally. Will drove me to the hospital

that night while your mom was in labor." He paused for a few seconds before continuing.

"Your mom...her name was Sylvia. She had some complications during labor and she passed away shortly after you were delivered. Sylvia was only able to hold you for

a few minutes and she asked me to promise her that you'll be taken care of and wanted for nothing." He was full of tears at this time. I patted him on the back to try and

comfort him. I had no idea that he went through this.

"I had no stable income Shawn and alcohol was my best friend. Your mom and I wasn't together but she's the only woman I've ever loved. I couldn't lose you to the

system. You're the only thing I have left of her. And this.

He handed me a picture of my mom holding me moments after she delivered me. She was beautiful.

My dad continued the story. "Rob called me in the room that night and asked if we would take care of you. He felt he was doing what was best for you. As you know, he's

always been around and that's why he took the role of being your Godfather."

It was true. Uncle Rob had been the best Godfather I could ever ask for. He's always been there for me and now that I think about it, we act alike in many ways. This will

also explain why I favor him more than my dad. I regret not listening to him that night. My anger and disappointment got the best of me I guess.

"I forgive you both and I apologize for going this long without speaking to you. Uncle Rob, I understand why you did what you did and I can respect that." I hugged them.

"Now, how am I supposed to address you guys now?" They looked at each other and then me.

Uncle Rob suggested that we keep things how they've been. We spoke about the situation for a few more minutes before they gave me the third degree on Nia.

"So what happened with you and Nia? I thought you two would be married." My dad asked.

"Ah dad, I messed up. When I left you two bozos, I kinda dipped out on her too. I felt lost."

"You need to fix that Shawn, you two were perfect." Uncle Rob nodded in agreement.

"You guys are funny." I laughed. "I'm sure Nia has moved on by now and did you forget I brought my girlfriend with me. You'll meet Robin later."

"Whatever makes you happy son." My dad got up and went to the bar and I noticed a sneaky look he gave to Uncle Rob. "Well Shawn, we will all be going to town

tomorrow night for the Christmas Festival. You should come."

"I think I will." We drank one last drink together and I left to pick Robin up.

Christmas Eve (The day of the Christmas Festival) Shawn's Version.

"Merry Christmas Eve Everyone!" My mom said cheerfully to Robin, my dad, Uncle Rob, and me. We were headed out to the Christmas Festival my dad spoke about last

night. He swears to me that it will be a night to remember. I briefly thought about Nia. When I asked my mom about her, she didn't give me much info. I went into town

earlier today hoping I would bump into her, but no luck. She deserved a face to face apology.

We pulled up to the festival and it was outstanding. Everything was lit up! There was an ice rink and lots of booths with Christmas treats. Robin and I separated from the

group to do our own thing.

"Oh Shawn!" Robin said excitedly. "This is lovely. Lets go around to each booth to have some treats. She rubbed her tummy. I'm actually kind of hungry."

"Sure hun." There were so many to choose from. I didn't know where to begin. It shocked me that my little hometown could pull something like this off. We went to a pie booth first and got a slice of pecan pie and buttermilk pie. They were amazing.

As we were headed to the next booth, I spotted an old friend from high school. His name was Ryan. Robin tugged on my sweater as I was turning to walk Ryan's way.

"Hey baby, can you go without me? I wanna catch up with an old friend. I'll be right behind ya in a sec."

"Okay love. Don't take too long." She pouted.

"Wassup Ryan Man?!" I dapped him up like we used to do in school.

"Whoa Shawn? Dude where have you been!"

"I've been in New York getting my life together. I came home to spend Christmas with my family."

"Spending time with family is always good man. It's good to see you again, but I'm gonna let you go man because you have three sets of eyes drilling a whole in you."

"Huh?" I said asked confused. He pointed behind me. I turned around to see what he meant. Robin, Nia, and Nia's best friend Dana all were staring at me, but Robin

was the only one smiling at this point.

We were down to the last batch of my Creme Brulee Cookies when this woman filled with cheer walked up to my booth.

"Merry Christmas!" I said smiling at her.

"Merry Christmas to you too! Your cookies look delicious and they smell even better. What kind are they?"

"Well thank you!" I exclaimed. "These are my famous Creme Brulee Cookies. Please have some." I placed a few on a plastic plate and handed them to her.

After the first bite, she hurried and stuff the rest in her mouth. "Oh my, she mumbled before swallowing. These are amazing! I just remembered my boyfriend told me how

someone in his hometown made the best Creme Brulee Cookies and that has to be you! By the way, my name is Robin."

She turned around to call her boyfriend over. I looked to where she was pointing and when he turned around, my heart dropped. Normally, I would be popping my

knuckles, but I couldn't move. Dana didn't say anything and Robin, still smiling, waved for him to come over. Our eyes met and all we could do was stare.

and Nia

My eyes met Nia's and I couldn't look away. She still was beautiful. I slowly walked over to her booth, but I wasn't sure what I was walking into. Robin appeared to be

eating Nia's famous Creme Brulee Cookies, my favorite.

"Shawn, you have to taste these! They're delicious!" Robin placed the cookie to my mouth. I didn't budge. I stared at Nia and admired her beauty and the beautiful red

dress she wore. She stared back into my eyes, long enough for Robin to realize something was happening.

"Uh hello?" She waved her hand in my face. "Do you two know each other?" Realizing that Nia and I were in a daze, Dana spoke up in our place.

"Yes they do. They're each others true love."

"No, no Robin," Nia said coming back to her senses. "We dated a long time ago and its over." Nia was brokenhearted. Shawn had moved on and she couldn't even give

another guy the benefits of her love. With tears falling down her face, she ran away.

Shawn wanted to wipe her tears. Once again he felt lost and he knew he let her down. He turned to Robin with so much hurt in his eyes. "Robin, I'm sor-"

"Shawn, she smiled. It's okay. Go after her. The way you looked at her explains it all." She kissed him on the cheek.

Shawn lit up and hugged Robin and thanked her for understanding. He ran to catch Nia. He now knew why his dad suggested him to come tonight. Messy but dope.

When he caught up to Nia, she was standing near the ice rink still crying.

"Nia, sweetie, I'm so sorry. Can we please talk?"

Wiping her tears, "Go away Shawn. There's nothing to talk about."

"But there is. I know you want to hate me for leaving like i did and there is no excuse. I was a coward." He grabbed her by the waist.

"Nia I love you, I've always have, and always will."

"Oh yeah? You love me but you're in a relationship and you brought her home. You didn't care how that would make me feel." Crying again, Nia began screaming at

Shawn. Everyone was starting to direct their attention to them.

"I've never stopped loving you. I gave my heart to no one else, hoping we would find our way back to each other. You left me Shawn! We made promises and because of

you, they're broken. Why did you leave me? Commitment was an issue for you?"

Shawn now was crying. He knew he was selfish for leaving her the way he did. He never meant to hurt her. He pulled her closer and kissed her on the forehead.

"No baby, committment has never been an issue for me with you. It's always been you. No one else would ever make sense. I know I wrote in the letter that I left

because I wasn't ready to committ, but it wasn't that. It was something else.

"What else could it have been Shawn?"

He began to explain to her how he found out on the last Christmas he was there, that his Uncle Rob was his biological father and his dad was really his uncle. For a

minute she didn't speak.

"You could have trusted me with that Shawn. I would have been your support through it all."

"Ni, I know that now but at the moment, I didn't know what to do. I wasn't myself. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me baby. I need you."

She thought about it for a second, then smiled. Happy with knowing what actually happened, Nia dried her tears and hugged him tightly. "Never let me go." She said.

"I promise I won't." Shawn said.

"So what now?" Nia asked.

Shawn smiled and grabbed her face, stared in her eyes once more, then kissed her passionatley. When they stopped kissing, they turned around and saw his parents,

Dana, Robin,Nia's mom, and a crowd of people cheering and smiling.

"Oh my God, what a crowd! " Nia said looking around. They both giggled and walked over to the crowd. Nia apologized to Robin for the obvious.

"Girl please! I'm a fan of true love and I'm glad that I could be a part of it." They hugged.

Shawn pulled his dad to the side. "So is this what you meant by a night to remember?"

My dad laughed. "Robin is a very nice girl son, but Nia has always been the one."

I looked over at Nia. "Yes she has."

"Miracles do happen at Christmas time." Dana said to Nia.

"I'm still in shock of what just happened. Did I really just get the love of my life back?"

"Girl yess! This was so romantic. Dana fake cried. And to top it off, you're about to make some money. Dana started twerking.

Nia rolled her eyes. "What do you mean?"

"When Shawn ran after you, homegirl devoured more of your cookies and wants to buy a few batches."

"Really!? This night is full of surprises. I feel kind of bad for ending her relationship though."

"Girl bye, she'll be alright. And that's not it Ni. She wants to get you business opportunities in New York too! I guess Shawn isn't the only one who wants your cookies."

They both laughed.

Nia and Shawn met back up with one another. Dana offered to take Robin back to her family's home.

"You look stunning in this red dress girl." Shawn said mesmerized by Nia's look for the night.

Blushing, she kissed him on the lips. "Thanks Shawn. You look quiet handsome yourself."

"Would you mind going ice skating with me?" He reached out his hand to hers. She grabbed a hold and they picked up some skates.

"I don't know how to skate Shawn."

"Oh don't worry, I'll hold you and I promise I'm never letting go." She smiled and let him guide the way.

They were the only people left skating when the festival was coming to an end.

"This Christmas will be perfect. I get to wake up tomorrow morning knowing I have the love of my life back in my life."

"I feel the same. With everything that has happened, with us and your dad and uncle, it seems like some kind of Holiday love spell going on."

Shawn smiled. "I couldn't agree with you more. I love you Nia."

"I love you too Shawn.
