Strange song to remind a father of his first son....

It was April of 1997, this song was relatively new and still being played on the radio. It was a Saturday morning, early morning. He would always wake early back then and so would I. Tammy was fast asleep. We had a cheap radio in the living room on top of the tv that still had 2 tape decks for playing ancient cassette tapes. We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment, the three of us. The morning sunlight was shining through the glass back door and windows. The early spring air outside was crisp and smelled like cut grass and daffodils.

Tulips were breaking the surface.

I turned the radio on and after feeding and changing him I snatched him up and began swaying to the music. I had my left forearm under his butt and my right hand was holding his back pressing him close to me. The way you hold a baby. His lower left leg was in my left hand....

He was barely six months old.

I began to sway side to side spinning slowly backwards from moment to moment in our living room.

We danced.

His head, he had rested against my left shoulder and in much the same way we hug now, he raised his little arms around my neck and squeezed for the first time. Like I said he was only 5 or 6 months old.

It was my first hug from one of my own children.....

In the background I heard her sing the chorus.

"And I'm in so deep" "You know I'm such a fool for you" "You've got me wrapped around your finger"

And I remember my own voice in my head replying

"Yes, yes he does. Always...."

After 21 years they still play this song on the radio and whenever I hear it, I'm reminded of the sun that morning and the feeling of being hugged for the first time by my champion.
