The missing ingredient

With sadness, I view the decline of western civilization,

when are some going to come to the inevitable realization

that basic civility, basic humanity, have gone away

and left us with the mangled nightmare of today?

That the sorry, sad image reflected in the mirror

is nothing but a shadow, is anything but clear?

As Oppenheimer once said, 'We are the hollow men,'

settling for crude in the place of where our heart's had been,

the norm for all of history, the innate common sense

of the American people, there can be no doubt, it's past-tense

We all can see an ill-defined something is missing,

action, not words is what we need, not misguided wishing

Not to see the world we hope for, but the world as it is now,

but if this can be done at all, I sure don't see how
