“The Unplanned Pause”

He really tried

to make it

work

she had

everything

he could ask

for

in a girlfriend

she was smart

kind

and

Oh Yea,

she was sexy

he had seen

her full form

many

many times

and he’s yet

to find a

flaw,

all this

seemed

like the perfect

fit

they had their

week

planned out

to the day

from dinners

at Michelin star

restaurants

or just drinks

with friends

it all followed

a very straight

predictable line,

he was envied

by most of his

male friends

and why not

nobody could

point

to anything

that was

missing

in his relationship,

he noticed other

women

few men don’t

he would even

take in their

most alluring

features

but they never

had

any kind of

a pull on

him

he couldn’t even

imagine

a woman

he would leave

his girl for

till he turned

that corner and

she

walked by,

he found his

eyes

following her

and after a

few beats of

his heart

he asked himself

why,

her figure

wasn’t overly

stunning

more than a

few

guys walked by

without a turn

of their head

her height

was at best

average

though her legs

went on for

days

and that might

have been

the end of it

had she kept

walking by

him

but she paused

to adjust her

shoe

and it might

have been

that she felt

his audit of

her

as she was

bending down

towards

the heel

of her shoe

that his eyes

were taking

of some of

her

most obvious

parts,

looking back at

him

with her finger

still stuck

in her shoe

her head at

a forty-five

degree angle

as he unknowingly

tilted his head

as he watched

her,

her pixie cut

red hair

framing her face

as a pair of

crystal green

eyes

look up from

her shoe

and into his

“Hi”

is all she says

as she frees

her finger

from the heel

of her shoe

slowly pulling

her frame

upright

his head

tilting back

to its normal

position

matching the

movement

of her body

as she

straightens up

and gives him

a whimsical

smile

that breaks

through

to his heart,

he stands

there

wondering why

she looks

so much taller

now

as his eyes

open wide

trying to

take in

all of her

beauty,

“hey”

“you wouldn’t know”

“where a girl can”

“get an energy drink”

“would you”

she says to him

unaware of the

landslide of

feelings

she has caused

to

come crashing

down

on his heart,

he just points

to a door

and only

gets out

one

two syllable

word

“breakroom”

she gives him

a combination

nod

of thanks

and see ya

and pushes her

way

through that

door

as he stands

alone

in the hallway

drowning in a

sea

of confusion

not yet

understanding

he’s never going

to see his

girlfriend

in quite

the same way

ever again…
