A short story written for India Emerald's latest Flash Fiction Challenge. Although fiction, there is a lot of truth in this one.

These Boots Were Made For Walking

“What did you buy them for? They’ll never last the winter.”

That’s what my friends said but I loved my boots, did not regret buying them for one moment. And hey, they were not expensive, but oh, they were so warm.

Thick grey and white fur lined every part of them, from the toes right to the tops. So soft and enveloping; the thick fur makes them take up the shape of my feet. It can be freezing outside but my feet are sure to be warm inside them.

“Don’t get them wet. They’ll soak up water like a sponge.”

Well, okay, I was kind of worried about that. Not leather, not suede, but some kind of synthetic material, I was not sure how it would react to either puddles or snow. Not long ago I had a pair of suede boots but they were a disaster when made wet. It was not so much that they let the water in, but they stained. Badly! I spent ages trying to remove the white tide-lines from those black boots but nothing I did would make those marks any less visible. The boots really were pretty much ruined.

First off, these are not black. Some kind of mix between brown and grey....would it be dark taupe? I felt that if they did get stained it might not be quite so glaringly obvious. As it happened, I need not have worried. I have walked through wet grass in them, and along wet pavements. So I’ve not gone leaping into puddles in them, or walking along the edge of the sea, but with what I have done my feet have stayed completely dry. Not only that but my boots have remained unmarked.

Two straps, one across the top, and a smaller one just above the ankle. I adjusted them when I first got the boots but since then I’ve not touched either of them. What can be better than a pair of boots that you can simply step in to. No bending necessary, no laces to struggle with; simplicity itself!

The soles are not like the real trekking boots; you know, the ones that almost look like tyre treads. But then I’m not planning on going hill-walking, or rock-climbing in them. No, for general street walking, even in slippery conditions, they’re fine. And when it’s extra cold I’ll wear them indoors too. Not having those soles, I don’t have to worry about them leaving those tell-tale black streaks on the lino.

So, to my doubting friends I’d say I made a really good purchase. Could be that next year they will be after some too? But then again, maybe they won’t be around. I’ve just gone and ordered myself an extra pair to hang on to – just in case!

Sue Harris

Well, a story about a pair of boots is a first for me and you nailed it, Hully. Well done!

Thanks, Sue. India's new challenge was to write a descriptive story on an item. I've got a similar pair of boots to the pic so that's what I went with. Glad you enjoyed the read!

Back in the day kip leather - that’s inside out - and fill them with neatsford oil. Stained socks and stank, but kept your feet dry! But unless you wear putties, water goes down the tops and can’t get out! Anyway. Usianguke

This was written for India Emerald's latest Flash challenge. The thing was I'd bought a pair of boots similar, but not the same as the ones in the picture. One review said that they soaked up water like a sponge and that simply wasn't true. I can easily walk through long wet grass and not get my feet wet although how many months they'd stand up to it remains to be seen.
Thanks for reading, Moa!

I'm surprised that I can relate to this story, although things didn't turn out so well for me. In high school, I owned a really nice pair of brown suede shoes - they were class, even though they were sneakers. I loved them so much! I wore them on my first day of work as a dishwasher. By the end of the night, they were wrinkled and stained. They were so destroyed that they became my regular work shoes. A valuable lesson learned there.
This was an enjoyable read. A one-way, casual conversation; an amusing anecdote, and also a great sales pitch! Nicely done, Hully!

Perhaps I missed my calling in life, Jeff! Should have gone in to advertising! As a side note I did actually win a competition many years ago writing any advertising slogan for a breakfast cereal!

I really do own a pair of boots similar to those only they are black! Thanks for reading!

India's challenge was to write a descriptive story about an item, so this was what I came up with. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Tom.

A good pair of boots are hard to find and even harder to keep.

They sure are. You wear them and they wear out! Thanks for reading, Ian.
