FADE IN:

INT. KANOYA RESIDENCE, GREENHOUSE – DAY

TSUKURU KANOYA is watering the plants as it’s still a few minutes before he goes to work.

He has quite a collection. A Sequoia, a St. Helena, a Dracaena, an Areca, etc.

AYA (V.O.)

(in Japanese)

Father, we’re ready to go!

TSUKURU

Coming!

CUT TO:

Middle aged Father and teenaged daughter driving down to the marketplace.

TSUKURU

Did you solve the equation before we left?

AYA

Um…sure. It was really hard, but I found a way around it. Thanks to you, of course!

TSUKURU

(sarcastic)

You’re welcome.

He looks at her with a glance that says “I know you’re lying, but good try, nevertheless.”

AYA

(giving in)

Okay, look, maybe I couldn’t solve it, but I did think hard and long about it!

TSUKURU

Think longer and harder. Nobody gets their work done by only going half the mile.

AYA

But it’s hard!

TSUKURU

Nothing’s hard as long as you submit it to your will.

AYA

Great advice, Dad. Really great.

TSUKURU

It’s not the end of the world.

AYA

Tell that to my teachers.

TSUKURU

They’re just trying to help you focus and show determination.

AYA

They can give hints.

TSUKURU

That’s what I’m here for.

AYA

Not like that, Dad.

TSUKURU

Oh. I see.

EXT. VILLAGE, MARKETPLACE – DAY

This village is one of those tiny islands one often hears about but never bothers to visit, unless one is curious. And like most islands, it’s a simple place, one you can talk a day’s walk around and see all the place.

It consists of a community of people who know each other, like each other, and help each other, even despite their differences.

As they park, Tsukuru and Aya realize that a crowd of friends are gathering about one corner of the beach. Curious, they walk up to investigate what all the fuss’s about.

TSUKURU

Is something wrong?

RESIDENT 1

There’s something in the ground.

Aya squeezes through the crowd, and finds a meteorite with a bizarre, shifting color scheme. She is amazed, yet at the same time bewildered.

CUT TO:

Its afternoon and the local authorities are loading the meteorite into the back of a truck.

OFFICER

Alright folks, get back to your places.

CITIZEN 2

Oh, come on! Just another look…

CITIZEN 3

What is it?

CITIZEN 4

You think it’s an alien?

CITIZEN 5

Someone should tell whatshername…Sol…?

TSUKURU

(to Aya)

Come on, let’s get what we came for.

AYA

But…

TSUKURU

Not now, Aya.

Reluctantly, she follows him. CUT TO:

INT. KANOYA RESIDENCE, HOUSE – AFTERNOON

Tsukuru and Aya have dinner in the living/dining room.

AYA

What do you think it was?

TSUKURU

A meteorite.

AYA

I know that! But what kind? You seen anything like it before?

TSUKURU

Can’t say that I have. Usually, meteors don’t have that kind of color scheme.

I don’t know why, but the first thing I thought about was a rainbow fish.

AYA

You think it might be some kind of an alien?

TSUKURU

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion.

AYA

I can’t believe it! How couldn’t you?

TSUKURU

Why would I do that?

AYA

(excited)

Dad, we have somebody who can fly and has super strength, we’ve got aliens coming in and landing here, we’ve got a Greek monster locked up somewhere, and we’ve got monsters coming out of dimensions! How could you not assume that it’s an alien?

TSUKURU

Is that what you’ve been doing instead of studying?

AYA

I…well, I…no.

TSUKURU

You really like that stuff, don’t you?

AYA

Sure.

TSUKURU

Especially…Sol, am I right?

AYA

Oh, she’s amazing! This one time, there was this guy called Charlie the Genius Dwarf, and he built this robot suit, only it wasn’t anything cool like the Alphas! So, he robbed a bank and held this reporter hostage, threatening everybody who comes near him that he’ll crush the strumpet!

TSUKURU

Strumpet?!

AYA

His words.

So anyway, he’s got her in his hand and it’s like a fist, and then, next thing you know, whoosh! Sol just rushes in, breaks the robot, takes him out, and gets the reporter down! She even allowed to be given interview by the reporter, and she just turns to the camera and says “Sorry I’m late. There was a flood in Norway I had to deal with.”

Pause.

TSUKURU

She is pretty.

AYA

Dad…!

TSUKURU

Just being honest with you.

AYA

Jeez…

TSUKURU

Has she done anything new these days?

AYA

(disappointed)

Not really. She does some stuff for the government now, stuff like dealing with armed threats overseas, stuff like that.

TSUKURU

Hmm. I thought that’s what the Alphas are for.

AYA

(shrugs)

Don’t know what’s happening these days.

DISSOLVE TO:

Aya in her room, on her back, staring at the roof. Her room is decorated with some Sol paintings and posters alongside some bands and other favorite material.

Her thought is occupied with the strange meteorite. Its origin, its purpose for coming, how would Sol would handle it.

Outside, we see the lamp go off, the entire house going black.

Fade out.

FADE IN:

Aya, not yet awake, walks in the living/dining room. TSUKURU is on the phone.

TSUKURU

Yeah. Yeah, sure. You sure you don’t want us to come by? Okay, look, if you need anything, let us know. Okay. Goodbye.

AYA

Is something wrong?

TSUKURU

No, Haruki’s just got a fever.

AYA

Is he alright?

TSUKURU

I’m sure he will.

AVA

…Alright.

CUT TO:

Them having breakfast. CUT TO:

INT. KANOYA RESIDENCE, GREENHOUSE – DAY

TSUKURU is tending to his plants. There is the sound of the phone. Reluctantly, he leaves, but we stay.

Dissolve to afternoon. There is a time lapse as the plants disintegrate in shape.

Dissolve to sunset. The plants are in worse shape.

Dissolve to night. The plants are dead.

CUT TO:

Aya with a petrified look on her face. She is too frozen to move. She lays on the floor, her body numb.

There is the sound of approaching footsteps. Something bumps against the door. It bumps again. It bumps again. And again. And again. Then…

The door is crashed through, and the zombie corpse of her father creeps in.

She stares at him, seeing nothing but a shell of her father approaching her. Like a shark, there isn’t a trace of even malicious intent, just glass faced malice.

Her fear sparked at the notion of what t’s going to do to her, she quickly jumps through her window and limps out, running for her life.

On the ground, unknown to her, is a trail of gasoline.

CUT TO:

Aya running to the other neighbors and spotting the other neighbors being infected, biting at and eating each other. Horrified, she runs off. CUT TO:

Aya reaching to the beach, and swimming off into the ocean.

Something grabs at her and despite her struggles, is pulled back to land. She looks up, and it’s Yoshiko.

AYA

(frantic)

Let me go! Let me go!

YOSHIKO

Sorry, you’re too late.

She knocks another can of gasoline and sets the trail on fire, spreading it through the entire village.

Off in the distance, the facility holding the meteorite blows up.

Then she pulls out a gun and shoots Aya in the head. As she drops to the ground, her arm is shown to be already infected.

CUT TO:

Yoshiko at the facility site, searching among the ruins. She finds the meteorite, which has stopped glowing; now, it’s just a husk of rocks. She beats a crack of the rock, and finds a small object in the ruins. CUT TO:

INT. BYRON MANOR – NIGHT

Cameras flashing. Cameras filming. Reporters barking at the screen with plastered smiles while dressed in gala outfits.

REPORTER 1

The youngest billionaire of the city…

REPORTER 2

Protocol son of Poe City…

REPORTER 3

…rumors with Samantha O’Connor be true?

Johnathon is walking alongside Victoria, arm in arm.

JOHNATHON

How many times does this happen to you?

VICTORIA

Every day, every week.

You like it?

JOHNATHON

No.

VICTORIA

How unfortunate, dear brother.

At least we have something in common.

ELITE 1

(shaking hands with Johnathon)

Johnathon, dear boy! Where’ve you been?!

ELITE 2

(hugging and kissing him on the cheeks)

Johnathon, Victoria, dears! You’ve grown…!

Johnathon tries to be as polite as he can, even though from his POV, he is already suffering from fatigue. Victoria is firmly holding him from falling.

Then a dashing young man with a punch-able smirk on his face clears through and walks up to them.

BERNARD CONRAD

Johnathon Byron. Dear boy, where have you been?

JOHNATHON

(attempting to joke)

On the moon.

CONRAD

Hahaha! You haven’t lost your touch.

VICTORIA

(sternly)

No, he hasn’t.

CONRAD

Victoria, you look fabulous today.

He kisses her hand, and she allows him in spite of disinclination.

VICTORIA

(slyly)

Always wearing the same suits, Bernard?

CONRAD

Fashion’s too slow these days, darling. One has to survive as much as they can.

(to Johnathon)

What do you say you join me in the library for a drink, will you? We’ve got a lot to catch up with.

JOHNATHON

I…

He looks outside the window and spots Yoshiko standing outside in the gardens.

JOHNATHON

Excuse me.

CONRAD

(to Victoria)

You must be happy to see him again.

VICTORIA

More than you can ever know.

CONRAD

It’s a new year for all of us, a new beginning. I’d be willing to share that beginning with you.

VICTORIA

Thank you, Bernard, but I’m spending my time with my family. There’s a lot to catch up to.

CONRAD

Suit yourself, m’lady.

Now, if you excuse me, I believe Elizabeth is calling.

He walks off, leaving her feeling disgusted. Norman passes by with a tray of drinks.

VICTORIA

(whispers)

Norman?

(leans in)

NORMAN

Yes, miss?

VICTORIA

Remind me why we keep inviting him?

NORMAN

Tradition, miss.

VICTORIA

Tradition…

Cut to:

EXT. BYRON MANSION, GARDEN – NIGHT

Johnathon has his palm planted on his face

JOHNATHON

Remind me again how you burned an entire island?

YOSHIKO

Paid some mercenaries, stole some cans of gasoline, set some bombs in places I couldn’t get to, blew and burned the place gave Newton a call, and saved the rest of the population from spreading the infection. It wasn’t nice, but what can you do?

JOHNATHON

What does it have to do with me?

YOSHIKO

(hands him over the chip with the logo)

Take a guess.

Close-up on a chip labelled EAGLE INDUSTRIES. Cut to black.
