Carl Lewis French aka Carl L. French aka Carl French (Age 69) of 3002 Ammunition Drive, Austin, Texas 78748, originally of Enumeration District 64-15, Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania (Honesdale High School, 474 Grove Street, Honesdale, Pennsylvania, 18431-1599 class of 1957), passed away Monday 2 March 2009 of cancer in Austin, Texas. He was the son of the late Elmer French (1908-?) and Marie French (1917-?).


He served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1961. He was stationed in Libya and the United Kingdom, became instrument certified on a USAF bomber, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his service. From 1962 to 1994, he served with distinction with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA/DS&T/OSIG/SCS/FLDOP and CIA/DS&T/OTC/SCS) in US Embassy Monrovia, Liberia; US Embassy Bangkok, Thailand; US Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal; US Embassy Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Iran, Switzerland, US Embassy Brasilia, Brazil (c. 1985 with Michael Fritz and others); US Embassy Bucharest, Romania; and US Embassy Lisbon, Portugal.
He was one of the CIA's original "Beach Boys"; played Embassy basketball games with one of President William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman's sons in Liberia; climbed to Base Camp I on Mt. Everest; excavated fossils in Ethiopia; went on safari in Kenya; skied the Alps in Switzerland; coached girls' softball and was on the American School of Brasília (EAB) School Board in Brazil (Conjunto E-Lotes 34/37-Sgas 605-Asa Sul, Brasília DF, 70200-650, Brasil); and was awarded a medal for his work in US Embassy Bucharest, Romania (Strada Tudor Arghezi nr 7-9, Sector 2, cod postal 020942, Bucure?ti, Romania: the Mauriciu Blank aka Maurice Blank (1848-1929) Mansion (1888)) during the Romanian Revolution (Revolu?ia Român?, 16-25 December 1989) under Ambassador Roger Kirk (1930-).


Upon retirement, he was active in the Austin Pond Society (3900 Glengarry Drive, Austin, Texas 78731) contributing to its newsletter "Ripples", help found the Texas Association of Pond Societies (TAPS, 2611 Perth Street, Dallas, Texas 75220), and was an official with his Austin-Shady Hollow Kiwanis (250 Creekside Drive, Buda, Texas 78610), now defunct.


Carl is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years, Carolyn Fay French née Clark (1941-);
two brothers, Alan W. French (12 May 1946-7 December 2013) of 190 County Road, #520, Fairfield, Texas 75840 (memorial 151837447),
and
John R. French (1944-) and his wife Beatrice Ann French née Newhart of 219 East 10th Street, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania 17815;
three children, Craig Lewis French and wife Alison French of 1996 Barkham Lane, Vienna, Virginia 22182;
Curtis William French and wife Keisha French of 118 Tanager Circle, Austin, Texas 78737;
and
Christopher J. French and wife Kathy French of Annandale, Virginia;
and five grandchildren: Victoria, Christina, Alexander, Logan, and Ian.
Carl was modest about his Portuguese language skills, which were impressive.
