Harrington was editor of 'The Catholic Worker' 1951-1953 and close to Dorothy Tobey aka Dorothy May Day aka Dorothy Day (1897-1980), a divorcée, anarchist, socialist, fan of Angela Davis (1944-), Fidel Castro (1926-2016), Daniel Joseph Berrigan, S.J. (1921-2016), Philip Francis Berrigan, S.S.J. (1923-2002), Daniel Ellsberg (1931-), Jane Fonda (1937-), H? Chí Minh ??? (1890-1969), Jim Jones (1931-1978) and the People's Temple, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (1878-1953), etc. etc. who had a string of affairs and at least one abortion (urged by woman-beater Lionel Calhoun Moise (1888-1952). She founded the Communist-inspired Catholic Worker Movement (CWM).

"The Catholic Worker" was as far left as I could go and still be in the (Catholic) church," he recalled of those flush years.

In October 1960 he became the first editor of the weekly newspaper of the Socialist Party-Social Democratic Federation.

In 1973 he was credited with coining the word "neoconservative".

By 1980, Harrington considered a run for President himself, though he threw his support to Democrat candidates instead.

In 1982, he was a founding member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

For those who think they need a terminal dose, there is 'Michael Harrington and Today's Other America: Corporate Power and Inequality' a documentary from 1999.

Wrote 'The Other America' ISBN 0-684-82678-X (1962) a pernicious screed that argued up to 25% of the nation was living in poverty. Many (such as historian Maurice Isserman (1951-) believe that this book is responsible for President Lyndon B. Johnson's "War on Poverty" and its perverted children (EBT cards, food stamps, Medicaid, Social Security benefits for people who never paid into the system, etc.) which has cost the American taxpayer $22 TRILLION and counting. With the book's acceptance, many believe Harrington became the pre-eminent spokesman for democratic socialism in America.

Harrington wrought as much damage with that "25%" nonsense as Ted Kennedy did with his "two million homeless".
