I promise.

Pia

New York. Not that important if you’re not me. Hi. My name is Pia Flagg. I am seventeen years old and I am starting my senior year of high school in four weeks. I’m not the brightest student either. But, it really it is all my parents’ fault.  They got a divorce last month. My mom bought my this diary to write how I “feel”. But I feel horrible. Wanna know what else is great? It was on their anniversary! They would always fight so I guess they were done on the day they actually got married. I moved in with my dad three weeks ago.  I started thinking about my life before the divorce. Last year, I was actually happy with it. I had great grades and spent the entire year with my best friends. Then, my parents got a divorce and ruined my entire life. I hope at least this year will be a little bit the same.” I wrote in my horrific but soothing diary.

“Four weeks!” I say to my mother in confusion. “Yep. Aren’t you ready to go back?” She asks. “No Mom! Summer can’t be ending.” I exclaim. I walk upstairs to check my phone. Nothing. Zero notifications. That’s because every single person in America is on vacation living up the rest of their summer. Senior year. I can’t believe this will be my last year of high school. Mostly just high school football though.  I am an offensive linebacker. I have been playing football since I was six. All I thought about was getting that tiny little trophy for “participation”. Well, now all I am thinking about is receiving a full scholarship. My dream school is Ohio State; I have wanted to go there for as long as I can possibly remember. Football is my life and this year is my chance to prove myself to the college scouts. I wish I was more in contact with the other two musketeers. I haven't talked to my friends since the end of the year party. I should probably call them or at least Pia. *dialing phone number* “Hello?” she said. “Hey P, What’s up?” I asked her. “Um...horrible. My parents got divorced.” she told be in a very upset tone. “Oh, I am so sorry. I had no idea” I told her very embarrassed. “It’s fine I got to go anyway. Talk to you later.” She said. “Okay bye.” I told her. Well, that went well. I thought to myself. Probably best if I go get ready for practice so that I am  not late. Being benched is the worst feeling in the world.

         Pia

*buzz* “Hello?” I said. It was A.J. he apparently was saying “hi” which was kinda weird but I guess it was kind of thoughtful. We talked for like literally ten seconds. The weirdest conversation in the whole universe.  I felt very locked in; and needed some fresh air. I walked downstairs grabbed my coat, phone, and my keys. “Hey Dad, i’m going to head down to Starbucks and get a coffee or something. I’ll be home soon.” I informed him. “Wait! Take this.” He told me. It was a small bottle of pepper spray. “Seriously Dad. I’m seventeen I can handle myself.’’ I told him in embarrassment. “Please just take it.” he begged. “Ugh, fine. I’ll be back soon.” I said. “Okay love you.” He shouted. “Love you, too dad,” I whispered.  I walked out of the house and headed toward my car. I hop in and turn it on . As soon as it’s on the music booms super loud. “Ahh!” I scream. “When did I even have the music on this loud!!” I yell in frustration. I drive off to Starbucks or Coffee Bean; really anything at this point. I decided to go to Coffee Bean because it was farther away from home. When I arrive, I see a perfect parking spot right in the front. “Yess!” I say in excitement. “The one thing that could go right today.” I whisper. Soon as that was said, someone pulled right into the spot I wanted. “You have seriously got to be kidding.” I scream at the women. “Pia!?” She said. “Excuse me?” I say.

         Alison

“Freedom!!” I yell. Finally finished the most uninteresting place in the whole universe, summer school. Dah dah dahhhh. I wanted to get a coffee, sit down and chill longer than a winter in Antarctica. I drove there without telling my parents. Half the time they never know where I am, but they don’t really care anyway. It took me maybe around five minutes to get there. I pull into the most perfect spot right in the front. I get out and close the car door to lock it. “You have seriously got to be kidding me.” I would recognize that beautiful Pia sounding voice anywhere. “Pia!?” I say heading around my car. “Excuse me?” She said. “You took my spot.” She said in frustration. “I’m sorry. Are you going into the coffee shop?” I ask hoping she was. “Well Alison if I manage to get another spot, I’m planning on it.” She says. “Okay I’ll see you inside then?” I asked. “Um...Okay?” She said confused. “Great!” I said. Then I galloped inside and ordered my coffee.

Pia

Did that just happen? I drive off and try to find another parking spot. Alison Michael, my high school bestie just stole my spot?  I am very confused. When did she get out of summer school? Finally after fifteen minutes of looking for a parking spot I found one. When I turned of my car I got a call from my mom. I hit decline. “Never again.” I whisper to the phone. I get out and lock my car. I head toward the door when I get a text from my mom. “Hi Piper, How are you and your dad? I miss you. Anywho, I just wanted to tell you Jason and I are getting married! I’m so excited and want you to be my maid of honor! I love you. You don’t have to but…” I stopped. Married! I wanted to cry but I forced myself not too. “Finally!” Ali yelled. “Hey, what’s wrong?” She asked. “I just need to go to the bathroom.”  I said about to cry. Ali always knew when I was about to cry. She always wanted to know even though she already knew. When I went into the bathroom my tears immediately ran down my face. They couldn’t stop. Tears, tears and even more tears. They were endless. I wanted to cry so badly but at the same time I wanted it all to just completely stop. All the tears from the divorce, from the marriage, my mom’s stupid boyfriend, moving out with my mom and in with my dad. Everything. I slid down on the wall and fell slowly. Mascara was running down my face. I looked like a my boyfriend dumped me or something. Then again I am single.. I wipe my face and forced myself to walk right back into reality. “P?” Alison said really sad. “What? What happened?” I ask very nervously. “It’s your dad.” she said. “He’s been arrested.”

A.J

As I am being rushed off the field on a stretcher, I think “ouch”. I’m almost a thousand percent sure my leg is broken. That was the hardest tackle I have ever received. I don’t remember a lot either. Maybe I got a bad concussion.. Wait what’s a concussion? I don’t even really know where I am. There’re so many bright lights. It really hurts my head. I can hear a woman yelling “A.J everything’s going to be just fine. Mom’s here it’s okay.” over and over again. It hurts to see that woman in pain. Almost as much as I am. I can’t remember anything that happened before tonight. When we reached the ambulance, they lifted me up inside. Everything was different colors. Mostly red. Also, there was a huge cabinet with clear doors, filled with a million things in it. For the first time I was a little scared. They put something over my nose. It was improving my breathing. All of a sudden I felt very tired. My eyes got extremely heavy. Going, going, going, gone.

           Pia

I was pacing in the jail waiting room. “Miss Flagg?” called an officer. “Yes! That’s me.” I yelled. He guided me back into a dark room with only two lights. “Dad! What did you do?”

           A.J

When I woke up everyone was excited. I am in a dark hospital room. But there are only the candles that are lighting up the room. I look around and see a giant teddy bear that reads “I Love You”. There were also a lot of balloons. Just a lot of gifts and cards. I look forward and my foot is in a huge cast in a sling hanging from the ceiling. “Mom…” I say very quiet. “A.J! Yes, are you okay?” she asked excited. When she took my hand I felt her shaking like a scared wet dog. “I’m okay Mom. I promise.”

Alison

“Hey it’s Pia. Sorry I couldn't…” I stopped the voicemail. “ What is happening”I yell. I am the most impatient person you'll ever meet. But now of all moments it's really kicking in. I have called Pia thirteen times and left twelve voicemails. What in the world is she doing! I hope her dad isn't in jail forever. I miss Pea. Seriously she never even got her coffee! She cried in the bathroom. I knew something was wrong. I wish she would just open up and tell me. I regret the last day of school. She's my best friend and I needed to treat her way better than I did. She deserves a way better friend than I ever was…

Pia

“Dad! What did you do?” I ask very upset. “Honey I…” I stopped him. “Dad i’m not ten anymore just tell me!” I screamed. I saw the regret and the disappointment is his eyes. I felt bad for yelling. My dad is my closest, most favorite person in the entire world to me and this hurt both of us. “I needed money to pay off the divorce. I couldn’t afford it and you mean so much to me I didn’t want to lose you. So… I stole from Angelo’s bank account.” He told me with shame. “Angelo? Your boss?” I questioned. “Yes, that’s him.” he agreed. “Dad, how could you? You’re better than this.’’ I shamed him. “I know. I should have.” I stopped him again. “ Dad, You don’t need to apologize to me. You need to apologize to yourself and Angelo. Honestly, I think you should talk to mom too.” I suggested. I could see in his face he knew I was right but hated it. I think that’s where I get it from. I hated to see him in pain. But he needed it.

         A.J

I am expected to be in the hospital for another two days. I miss my house and clean fresh non-hospital air. “Hey Mom?” I called. “Yes A?” she replied. “Can I have my phone?’ I ask very polite so she’d say yes. “Sure. Not too bright though.” She answered. I had so many texts. All from Ali? What a surprise. Usually i’m the one texting them. Texts from Ali. 12:27 “A.J! Mr.Flagg has been arrested! Can you get a hold of Pea? Pleaseeee???” 12:27 “Meet us @ the police station!! I’m way too impatient for this. Heeeeelp Meeee!!” 12:28 “A.J Pickup the phone this is urgent!! Pea and I need you. I need to find out what’s going on!” After reading just three texts my head started hurting. I wish I could help them. “Hey A.J. I’m going to run downstairs to the food court. Want anything?” My mom announced. “Um. Could you please get me a chicken sandwich without mayo?” I exclaimed. “Course.” She answered. As soon as my mom was gone I called Pia. *ringing* No answer. Oh Pia.

Alison

“I’m restless and A.J won’t respond to any of my texts!” I snapped. “I’m tired of waiting for nothing!” I declared. I got out of the car and walk in the station. I waited another half an hour for her to come back out. She started crying really hard. I have never seen her cry so hard in my whole life. She needed one of my world famous “when my best friend is crying” hugs. “C’mere” I insisted. She came and draped into my arms. She was absolutely defeated. Whatever happened with her dad really got to her. We headed back to my car. She cried even more. I hugged her even harder. I love her. I hate seeing my best friend in pain. But, i’m going to keeping hugging her until she needs me to stop.

Pea

As I walked out of the dark room my eyes hurt from the light. I started to cry. Harder than in the bathroom. These tears were unstoppable. Ali was out there waiting. “C’mere” She insisted. Good thing she was taller than me. I dropped my soul right in her arms. We walked back to her car. I cried and she helped me through it. Just like she always has. My Best Friend.

          A.J

My leg feels like it’s in prison. No offense to Pia or her dad. I wish she didn’t have to go through all of this. “Mom?” I called. “Yes Honey?” She answered. “Why is God making Pia’s life so difficult for her right now?’ I questioned. “God has a plan for everyone even though it might not be easy. God loves us all and will make sure Pia is okay.” She explained to me. My mom gave me a peck on the head. “Just like your leg. God makes everything happen for a reason.”

           Alison

We drove back to Pia’s house. It started to rain. “What happened to A.J?” Pia asked me. “You know i’m not sure. He wasn’t answering any of my texts.” I replied. I dialed A.J’s number. “Alison! Hey are you and P together?” He asked excited. “Yeah why?” Pia said. “Pia! Hey I’m so sorry about your dad, I wish I was there to help.” He apologized. “Why couldn’t you?” I questioned. “I got a concussion and I broke my leg in football two days ago.” He replied. “Oh my goodness!” Pia and I said in unison. “Are we allowed to visit you?” I asked him. Yeah just not now. There’s a storm!” He said very childish. ‘‘Clearly” Pia and I said again. We all laughed. The Three Musketeers were reunited.

          Pia

Alison slept over. I thought yesterday was all a dream. Turns out it was all reality. The storm cleared up. Last night, Ali popped popcorn and we watched twilight a million times and cried every time. We were planning on going to see A.J. “Hey! Morning. Want to borrow some clothes?” I asked. “Yess Please!!” She said. We both chuckled and got dressed.  After that we hopped in Ali’s car and drove over to the hospital. “Do you think we should get him a gift?” I asked. “Well Duh! And especially a card.” Ali said enthusiastically. I got A.J a football teddy bear that read “ You got it dude.” Then Ali got him a giant card that read “Get well soon champ” with a heart at the end. We took the elevator up to the fourteenth floor. The lady in the front said he was room 56W. We followed the room numbers for approximately 29 seconds to find his room. When we found it his mom walk out. “Hi Mrs. Carol.” We whispered. “Girls! Hi, He has been waiting all day for you guys. Go in!” she whispered back. “Ready?” Ali whispered. “On Three. One...two...three” She counted. We bursted in with our gifts to find him with the biggest smile. “Surprise!!!” we shouted. “The musketeers have been reunited!!!” He shouted happily. Ali and I both went on a side to give him a hug. “How’s your foot A?” Ali asked him. “I really can’t feel a whole ton of pain because of the cast.” A.J informed her. “Can we sign it? I added. “Sure I can’t see why not.” He muttered. “Do you have a marker?” I questioned Alison. “Yeah. From the card.” She told me. After we signed the cast we hung around. We watched Looney Tunes for a while. Then we forgot about the gifts and so we gave them to him. Then a got an unknown call. “Hello? Dad?”

           A.J

“Surprise!!” Ali and Pea surprised me in the hospital. But, before all of that my mom got a weird phone call. She said it was her attorney. But, why? Was it because of Mr.Flagg? What’s happening.
