Berkeley Greene Tobey aka Berkeley G. Tobey aka Berkeley Tobey (1881-1962) 570-24-5039 Greenwich Village demi-monde swimmer (in the company of Jo Gotsch, Edward Goodman, Kirah Markham (1891-1967), Clement Wood (1888-1950), Marjorie Jones and her lesbian lover Tracy Knight, Justus Sheffield inter alia), rogue, roué, mal vivant and dilettante leftist, married approx. eight times (a couple of times in immigration fraud to give US residency to foreigners, in exchange for which he demanded connubial favors and vacation travel).

Besides being a serial husband, Tobey was a reporter for 'The New Republic', and business manager of the socialist magazine 'The Masses'. Tobey was a very close friend of author Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser (1871-1945) and was a pallbearer at his funeral (along with Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, KBE (1889-1977), William James Durant (1885-1981), Leo Gallagher (?-?), Mark Goodman (?-?), Dan James (?-?), Dudley Nichols (1895-1960), and Lt. George Smith (?-?).

In Haworth, Tobey and his second wife Virginia Norah Tobey née Forrest aka Virginia Norah Forrest (?-?) married 1918 lived on Haworth Drive, Haworth, New Jersey 07641 (she wanted a respectable house in the suburbs, according to Berkeley and Virginia’s son, Forrest Tobey Choate (1917-2010).

Virginia soon left Berkeley for an unidentified "shell-shocked, multi-medalled WW1 solder" (sic) she met at White Beeches Country Club, 70 Haworth Drive, Haworth, New Jersey 07641.

The important wives included

Dorothy Tobey aka Dorothy May Day aka Dorothy Day (1897-1980), a divorcée, anarchist, socialist, fan of Angela Davis (1944-), Fidel Castro (1926-2016), Daniel Joseph Berrigan, S.J. (1921-2016), Philip Francis Berrigan (1923-2002), Daniel Ellsberg (1931-), Jane Fonda (1937-), H? Chí Minh ??? (1890-1969), Jim Jones (1931-1978) and the People's Temple, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (1878-1953), etc. etc. who had a string of affairs and at least one abortion (urged by woman-beater Lionel Calhoun Moise (1888-1952). She founded the Communist-inspired Catholic Worker Movement (CWM);

and

Esther Tobey aka Esther McCoy (1904-1989), an architectural historian. She was an active member of the Left who wrote for 'Direction', Upton Sinclair's 'EPIC News' ['End Poverty in California'], and the 'United Progressive News' and, it must be added, quite wealthy.

Forrest was the only son of Berkeley Greene Tobey aka Berkeley G. Tobey aka Berkeley Tobey (1881-1962) and second wife Virginia Norah Tobey née Forrest aka Virginia Norah Forrest aka Virginia N. Tobey née Forrest aka Virginia Tobey née Forrest (?-?).

Daphne Elizabeth Choate, his loving wife of 65 years, preceded him in death (1924-2007). She was, like her husband, an enthusiastic ham radio op (Call Sign: KB6FIX, Licensee ID: L00374447, Grant Date: 17 March 2004, Expiration Date: 31 May 2014, Certifier: Daphne E. Choate, Registrant: Daphne E. Choate, 384 Cimarron Court S.E., Salem, Oregon 97306).

Susan Good née Choate and her husband Willis Good of Salem, Oregon;

Deborah M. Lisle née Choate and her husband James Lisle of Salem, Oregon;

eighteen grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

A WW2 veteran, he had been a Signal Corps radar and communications officer serving in the American and China-Burma-India Theaters of operations. Following the war he went on to become a pioneer in television and news broadcasting in which he worked shows such as the Tonight show with Johnny Carson. After 32 years with NBC television at the Hollywood and Burbank Studios he and Daphne retired to Crescent City, California. Forrest was an active amateur radio operator for 78 years engaging in worldwide communication from his station K6HY. While living in Crescent City he served on the Del Norte County Planning Commission and the Del Norte Amateur Radio Emergency Services from 1993 to 2001 when he and Daphne moved to Salem to be closer to family.

He was a great photographer and communicator who loved to share his life stories. All who met him found him to be a kind, gentle, compassionate and loving man. Forrest loved and adored his Savior Jesus Christ, and all his earthly family who all knew of and felt his love. He will be missed and remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
