Uncles: Donald L. Munkel (1917-1991), Eugene R. Munkel (1928-2010), Harold Munkel, Lawrence Munkel, Stanley O. Munkel (1915-1996).

Graduated in 1960 with the last class from Lime Springs Independent High School. The following fall he attended Iowa State University. While there he was Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). He was in the Pershing Rifles, a close-order drill team.

In the fall of 1961 he did not return to ISU but instead joined the Army in Des Moines. He did Basic at Fort Leonard Wood where he was Outstanding Trainee of his basic training company (C-5-3) and did AIT at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.

Wayne was a SP4 (RA 17 608 443) in the US Army Security Agency (USASA) with MOS 056.18 (Morse Code op) 14 November 1961-17 August 1964 and served at Davis Station-3rd RRU (Radio Research Unit), Tan Son Nhut Air Base (C?n c? không quân Tân S?n Nh?t), 1963-1964.

Humanitarian at the Sancta Maria Orphanage, 77/96 Le Quang Dinh Street, Go Vap District in his off-duty hours.

BS from Iowa State University 1969.
