Writer’s Rally

What do you do when the words won’t come? When your mind is more tangled than a kitten’s ball of yarn. How can you put to paper, what you simply cannot focus on? Much happens in the day; some keeps you up nights, some are frivolous threads, gifts of entertainment. Your writing station is ready, your seat is comfy, your coffee is hot…yet, the page remains blank.

Things are done, things to do. Somethings you need, others you want. Places to see, adventures to have, and things to try. There are words you wish you could say, others you wish you hadn’t. People you want to meet, and others…well, you get the idea. The whole, wild (yes, wild.) world is waiting outside your window and door, yet…here you must sit as your coffee grows cold.

Waiting…

Waiting…

Always waiting for those confounded words! You started out on this road, not knowing what lay in store. Fantasies of knights with dragons, inspirationally poetic words moving the masses, and yes, chilling stories to be told under the moon, sitting ‘round campfires. These ideas filled your head and bolstered your confidence. Now, here you sit or pace your floor, eyes always drawn back to that blank page. A wish, a hope, a dream is waiting for you to take, but…the words won’t come. The knot…has grown larger. So, what do you do?

You write them anyway. Put pen to paper, fingers to keys, voice to microphone. Start with ‘This is how it all began.’ Or ‘I never thought it would end like this.’ Make a hero, create a villain. Bring a kingdom together, or tear one apart. Write of love, write of fear. Have a song, have a dance. Use every color imaginable, use all your favorite food. Have the words follow in order

Or have

Them fly

Across the

Page and back. Make it short. Or make it go on, and on, and on, and on…Add some sugar, mix in spice. A touch of this, a little of that. Now, wrap it with a big bow, (No! Not really! Don’t be ridiculous.). Take a step back and…

You finally filled the page (or two!). Does it all make sense? Perhaps not, but you may have found you’ve beaten that block. Not to mention had a few new ideas. Don’t always stick with what is stuck. Try something new, something silly even. It may take longer for what you want, or you may just find a new way of getting there.

So, to my fellow writers, this is your call to arms. Pens to paper, fingers to keys, voices to microphones; write. Write what you can until you’ve written what you couldn’t.
