Very short story

The Quiet.

It was quiet. The kind of quiet that sucked sound in and suffocated it. His footsteps were dampened by the tight-weave carpet, so much so that it rendered the creeping he was doing nonsensical. Still, he thought he'd better keep it up just in case someone was watching - in spite of the fact that the house sat in the middle of nowhere and he had not encountered another soul  for a full 24 hours previous to this moment. Details. He approached the doorway at the end of the hall and considered the best way to deal with the closed door. His leather-gloved hand rested on the handle and he closed his eyes.  He thought he felt the handle to be slightly warmer than the air surrounding him. This lent to the possibility of there being a fire-breathing one in the room. He pressed his ear against the door. Silence reigned. There was only one way to find out for sure. He squeezed the handle down until he heard a muted click. He pushed the door inwards half a centimetre and waited. He felt rather than heard the sharp intake of breath of whatever was on the other side. He knew that any element of surprise there had been was now lost. He threw the door open the rest of the way. It banged against the wall behind which threw it shut again. He threw the door open with slightly less force and cracked yellow eyes observed him with mild amusement while an overly wide jaw populated with stained, jagged teeth just looked annoyed. The whole of it looked hungry. He stood silhouetted in the doorway and cocked his head to one side in thought. Now would be the opportune moment was the thought. He reached behind him, grabbing for the handle of the metal stick that resided in the sheath strapped to his back. He darted the weapon over his head. It opened its mouth and let out a torrent of fire.

A nice piece of flash fiction. You built up the tension, then lessened it a bit with the door episode. Then straight back with that ending. Well done.
