“If music be the food o flove, sing on”, The well known quote about music from William Shakespeare is one that brings you right to the essence of what music is for. Although it doesn’t provide any immediate needs - food, shelter, etc, music is something that has been with us since the beginning of man, and begs the questiom - why are we drawn to music? And, what is its pur[pose?

Music is a type of storytelling. People gather in big outdoor parks to hear their favorite bands play, cram into crowded theatres to listen to a symphony, and fight for tickets to their favorite Broadway musicals. Storytelling is something that has been a staple in human society forever, so it makes sense that music has as well. Storytelling is important as it brings communities together, so similarly so does music. Without music, there would be much fore frustraation in the world. Music runson emotions - portraying and conveying them, and strengthing empathy. It’s no wonder that music has been a force of community since the cavemen times, its draw is unparralleled. Although it does not havw any “practoical” use, it is arguably one of the most needed implements of society. To connect with each other through music is something that very few other things have the power to do. So, as in shakespearea’s favorite quote, I ask of everyone that they “sing on.”
