This isn't my best work; it was just an idea I loosely sketched out.

Every year for Valentine’s Day, since we were seven years old, my best friend would give me a post-it note, with a black heart drawn on. When we went on to high school, I expected these notes to stop, but there was one waiting on my locker after first class. When we started dating, I started finding more of these little notes; in my books, stuck to my phone, in my coat pockets. Most times they were on my birthday, our anniversary, or Valentine’s Day. After we started living together in college, he’d stick them to the fridge, car windshield, my computer, or even the bathroom mirror!

These little missives were the best part of my day; a simple little note, with its carefully drawn heart. No matter what happened throughout my day, just the thought of these tiny tokens made me feel warm and loved. I should have expected it, but on the night that he proposed, stuck on the inside lid of the box was a miniature note. He promised me a lifetime of these perfect reminders; it was the happiest ‘yes’ I’ve ever given in my life!

It only seems right now, that because he couldn’t keep his promise, I would do it for him. The rain made the little hearts bleed; the black ink ran off the dozen paper slips stuck to the casket. Scattered inside were the thousands more he’d ever given to me. They obviously didn’t equal out a lifetime, but there were still birthdays, our anniversary, and of course, Valentine’s Day.
