First Love

It is Autumn. Sky is decorated with white and light clouds. Nice breeze is around. Mili is returning home town after a year. Her heart is singing  ‘Durga puja’ songs. She is staying far from home town in Chennai for the sake of her job. Office training, foreign projects, she just did not get the chance to think of her home town Kolkata visit. But regularly, she speaks to her mom over the phone. Her soul used to roam around her mom, love her childhood doll Sonali. She used to sit with her at the balcony & enjoy the sweet sun shine in her dream world. She used to miss mom made special fish curry with cauliflower. Today, she is feeling awesome. Unknown Tamil language, heavy traffic, small fights of auto driver everything seems soothing to her. She reaches Chennai Central station well in advance. Train is Coromondal express & AC 3 tier coach. She sits at the window seat arranging her bag and keep watching the small stalls on the platform. She may be sitting in the train but her soul reached her home, sweet home. She did not inform her mom about her visit, it is going to be a grand surprise for mom. On the 1st day of Durga puja, as usual, mom should be busy in kitchen preparing breakfast, probably flattened rice polau. Mili, her sister & dad ring the bell in a specific way, mom can easily identify that any of these three is at the door. That day hearing that very known & unexpected door bell, parents will be surprised! Dad will open the door astonishingly and call mom ‘hey, see who is at the door!!’ Then he will say Mili ‘ you said you did not get leave! What a surprise dear!’ Somewhat confused mom will come out from kitchen, hug Mili out of over whelm. Mili’s eyes get filled with tears. She gets back her sense that she is in the public place and comes out to wash her face.

Mili was standing at the door. Train just started. One gentleman with a huge bag on his shoulder was running on the platform with the train. Probably he was missing the train. Mili was confused on her stand, to try to help or not! She was not confident enough whether she can really make it. Hence, with lots of doubts she extended her hand. The man raised his speed and finally board the train holding Mili’s hand. He was totally exhausted running so fast with such a heavy bag. Anyway, Mili comes back to her seat. The man followed her in a while and found his seat just opposite to Mili. Resting for a couple of minutes, he thanked Mili.

Then a lazy journey with the rhythm of running train and window site. To overcome boredom they start chatting. He is Avinash, M.tech, visited Chennai for an official conference, residence at Hoogly near Kolkata. He loves to play mouth organ and have spicy puffed rice in snax. Mili was feeling brave like the hero Saharukh Khan in the movie ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ supporting Avinash to get his train. Mili draws cartoons. That’s her hobby. So, she does not miss the opportunity to draw snoring Avinash’s cartoon. Thereafter, by evening they have tea and Avinash favourite spicy puffed rice. It’s a common snax available in trains in India. Avinash plays mouth organ. Nice tune! Beautiful hindi romantic song! Excellent play! Mili was charmed and started whispering the song unknowingly. After some time they start playing cards along with other passengers as well. Avinash loves to tell and listen stories of vampire & soul. But Mili is scared of two things vampire & cockroach. Hearing that Avinash starts laughing. Feeling insulted, Mili shows him the snoring Avinash cartoon. Seeing that Avinash bursts in laugh. Suddenly, a lizard appears on Avinash in the running train. Avinash starts jumping and screaming out of shock. The next aunty throws it out of his shirt and everyone laughs on his reaction. Avinash becomes calm & cool.  Dinner was fried rice & chili chicken. Finishing the dinner having the i-pod in ears Mili tries to sleep.Mili & Avinash both are on the upper births. Tomorrow by this time, she will be with her lovely mom on her own bed. A cute smile comes on her leap.

Mili cannot be on bed more than 7 am. But until passengers of the lower births get up how can she come down & sit! So even after getting fresh, she has to lie down again on her own birth. No doubt it is irritating & boring too! It’s around 8.30 am. ‘ Will they not sleep at home here after!!’ Mili says to herself. She feels restless. The ticket checker leaves his seat & disappears, the opposite side, lower birth. Mili was just waiting for such an opportunity. She comes down and acquire the seat comfortably. Avinash was also screwed up same way. He follows Mili and asks for her permission to share the seat. Mili allows as if its her own seat only. They enjoy bread toast, veg cutlet & ginger tea in breakfast. Avinash prefers to spend holiday with friends and Mili with family. On such topics they keep chatting witnessing the window site. Atlast, the train reaches their destination, Howrah. Suddenly everyone becomes very busy, prepares to get down with own luggage. Waving good bye Mili too steps forward with the coolie, carrying her bag. On a very crowded platform Mili seems disappearing. Avinash feels left alone, as if scared of missing a good friend Mili, friend or something more…actually he is not clear! Raising his voice with a lot of hesitation Avinash asks ‘can we be friends?’ Mili slows down. Huge crowd was flowing in between. The coolie was moving forward with Mili’s bag. It was not very easy to call him or ask to stop. Mili was confused. She stairs back at Avinash for a few seconds, tells in her mind ‘ you are too late dear, I will always remember you as a sweet memory & short friendship of my life’. And moves out of Avinash’s sight.
