I snuck out and lost myself—like a pair of glass slippers hurting my toes

What a relief it was to feel the ground swell beneath my feet, all the dirt sticking against my sweaty soles

I ran off in no particular direction, with my shadow for a companion, nipping eagerly at my heels

Full and luminous, the moon saluted me from behind tall, black veiled trees; a kindly reassurance on my indefinite course—stretching all the way to nowhere and everywhere at once

What madness had propelled me thus—from the sanctum of my barless cage, amidst the summer’s humid night?

What impetuous lust burned at the core of my body, fueling my willingness to be carried away, dissolving my reason ability to a permanent state of nonexistence?

The answers to such queries remained elusive all the while as I ran on…chasing something, being chased by something intolerably near, intolerably distant, intolerably beyond my grasping…

What sought I? What had I to gain or truly abandon?

What did it mean, this wild instinct screaming in my head, shrieking at me to go on and on and on…without a breath of hesitation expelled from my aching lungs?

It meant life. It meant living.

It meant yearning and obliteration.

I capsized over the rim of oblivion, and skimmed the depths of damnation…

I tasted of the richest glorification on my journey back through the rippling surface of an enchanted dream…
