The word navy formerly denoted fleets of both commercial and military nature. In modern usage "navy" used alone always denotes a military fleet. It is the branch of a nation's armed forces principally designated for naval and amphibious warfare.

By English tradition, ships have been referred to as a "she". However, it was long considered bad luck to permit women to sail on board naval vessels. To do so would invite a terrible storm that would wreck the ship. The real reason was English ship's captains found impossible to maintain discipline among their crew members if a woman was on board. So, they came up with this myth of terrible storm that would wreck the ship. Since then, no crew members begged their captain to allow a woman on board. They had the choice between abstinence and homosexuality.

The custom of firing cannon salutes originated in the British Royal Navy. As the tradition evolved, the number of cannon fired became an indication of the rank of the official being saluted. That's how the marines learned to count in the Navy. They didn't learn at school, they learned on board.

Alec was a lieutenant colonel for the US Navy. At the Navy he learned to count (the number of cannon fired) and abstinence (the only women he asked to have on board were figureheads mounted on the prow of the ship as he knew he couldn't get a real woman). Before joining the Navy he had "Fun with Dick and Jane." Since he joined the Navy, only with Dick as Jane was not allowed on board.

At the Navy he learned about all the great sea legends: Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake and Sinbad the Sailor. He was fascinated by "The Adventures of Pluto Nash." But his friend Eddie had to tell him it was about a colony on the Moon called Little America by the year 2080. Alec didn't care, he still had hope one day to travel to the Moon on a spaceship to know Little America, the colony of the future. He also wanted to go to "Pearl Harbor" to see the "Ghosts of Mississippi." But his captain Doolittle told him a harbor couldn't be found on a river and a ghost couldn't be seen. So, he looked for "Outside Providence" in "Miami Blues." But he was told by Don Johnson that "Miami Blues" didn't exist, it had to be "Miami Vice." Finally, he decided to go on a "Journey to the Edge of the Universe." But he was told by King Julien that if he wanted to change his mind "Escape 2 Africa" to "Madagascar," or going "To Rome with Love" to find a "Blue Jasmine" would be better destinations. At the end of the day, Alec realized there was no "Shortcut to Happiness" as life "Seduced and Abandoned" you.

His first mission as an officer was "The Hunt for Red October," a new Typhon-class nuclear missile submarine with a stealth "caterpillar drive", rendering it undetectable to passive sonar. After consulting with Vice Admiral James Greer, the US feared Ramius (captain of Red October) planned an unauthorized nuclear strike against the United States. The Soviet Ambassador informed the U.S. government that Ramius was a renegade, and asked for help in sinking Red October.

Red October was suddenly attacked by Konovalov (Soviet submarine), which had tracked them across the Atlantic. Ramius sacrificed himself and scuttled Red October to avoid being boarded. He admitted that the reason he defected was that after he was handed the plans for Red October, a nuclear war first strike weapon, he concluded that he could never support such an action. From atop the submarine's sail deck, Alec thanked Ramius for having avoided a nuclear war by saying: "Welcome to the New World, sir."

"For better or ill, I was very heavily influenced by men I knew who always dressed formally."

Surprisingly, his childhood hero as a ship captain was "Captain Haddock." Indeed, he was fascinated by "The Adventures of Tintin," until he learned about "The Adventures of Pluto Nash." The idea of being the captain of a spaceship someday, and to go to the Moon, would make him a pioneer. A "Man on the Moon" like Armstrong.

Alec had strong political opinions, he was a dedicated liberal, both vocally and financially. He was anti-Republican and got to the extreme of calling them "lying thieves." He was also anti-racist:

"If Obama was white, he'd be up by 17 points."

He has voiced his support for gay marriage and stricter gun control measures, and his opposition to the Iraq War.

"Behind each number is a person, a victim, whose individual story is ghastly."

He is also a strong advocate for animal rights. He is "everything."

"To me, the Republican Party is the real great tragedy of the last 25 years because there are lot of good and decent people and a lot of good political points [that have] come from the Republican Party in the post-war period, but it has been hijacked by these fundamentalist wackos."

I told you. He is everything republicans hate.

"There's less critical thinking going on in this country on a Main Street level - forget about the media - than ever before. We've never needed people to think more critically than now, and they've taken a big nap."

So, forget about the media. Wake up from your nap and start to think critically. I guess, Trump is a fundamentalist wackos that hijacked his own country.

"So, goodnight Alec. If you want to get rid of the fundamentalist wackos that is leading your country, serve him some "Beetlejuice."
