I realize I’m staring again, but I can’t help it. I laugh awkwardly and take her hand and try to stand up, but I just end up tripping over a book and she falls down with me. This is going swimmingly. This is exactly how you make a good first impression with a very cute girl who probably thinks you’re insane by now.

“See what I mean? Don’t you feel more at peace? Feng Shui; it’s not a myth.” I can’t seem to do anything but talk about metaphysical Chinese systems which I know next to nothing about.

But she responds with a giggle that send chills down my spine. Not because it’s this beautiful sound to be compared to angels or some other holy nonsense, but because it’s so genuine and full sounding.

“Ah, yes, I should start doing this wherever I go. I can’t even begin to fathom why nobody else is doing this!” Her tone is lighthearted and mocking and my I become painfully aware that my grin is probably taking up my entire lower face at this point.

“What can I say; I’m quite the trendsetter. I’m Jasey Rae, by the way. But people usually just call me ‘Jay’.”

“It’s very nice to meet you Jay. I see you in here all the time and I always try to get your attention but I guess the only thing that works is a huge scene of falling and book dropping.” She has dimples that I could admire for hours on end.

“Really? I’ve never noticed you before, which is weird because usually I notice really cute girls that I only have conversations with in my head.” My rambling is becoming creepy and I cringe, waiting for her to become uncomfortable. But she doesn’t, she just blushes and looks down shyly instead. She tucks a stray curl behind her ear that is pierced all the way to the cartilage with tiny mermaid studs. I make a mental note to ask her about them later.

“You think I’m cute? Wow. I’ve been called a lot of things before, but never cute.” I want to implore her to elaborate but can tell by her tone that now, after knowing each other for all of fifteen minutes, isn’t the time. Instead I nod and blush in return. Now it’s my turn to be shy.

“So, Jay, do you want to get coffee sometime? I mean, we can always go to another bookstore and disrupt the calm environment with falling and proclaim our love to wizards and witches but warm beverages may be a nice change.”

“Wait. Is that a date?”

“Uh, yes?” Her voice is quieter, more hesitant.

“Oh man I didn’t mean to say that out loud. Sometimes my inner dialogue becomes external. As you can imagine, it’s a great way to not make friends.”

“Well, those people must not enjoy the best people this world has to offer. Quirks make us unique and interesting, and those who don’t see that are missing out on so much.” She holds my gaze and caterpillars suddenly morph into butterflies in my stomach and wreak havoc.

I’m the first to look away as I write down my number on one of my many index cards that I keep in my backpack to write down facts I learn or things I see that I want to be able to write about and remember later. I hand her the card and as she takes it our fingers brush and I once again am fixated on how soft her hands are. I really want to ask what kind of lotion she uses or if she sold her soul to get soft skin but a person can only take so much crazy at a time.

“Okay, cool! So, I guess I’ll call you later?” Call. Not text. Is she even real?

“I will be awaiting your call. Unless my phone gets stolen, which in that case I hope whoever answers is nice and friendly. I mean, they may have stolen my phone but that doesn’t mean they’re an awful person.” Rambling. Again.

She just laughs and touches one of my long braids, her gaze lingering on the pink streaks in my blonde hair. “Well, Jay with the cool hair; it was lovely to meet you and I’m sure my life is going to become infinitely more interesting with you in it.”

You have no idea.
