Inside the Detective’s House

DETECTIVE

(Waking up slowly. Looking into a Dark Room. Door Suddenly shuts and you jump back in fear. Slight Gasp. Stand slowly and go to the door. Open door slowly. Enter slowly. Flick on Lights.) Hey kiddo, you awake in here? (Notice the empty bed) (Begin looking around frantically) Aiden? Aiden? Where are you? (Run to the closet door. Briefly look into the closet. Hear movement behind you. Close doors.) Aiden? That you kiddo? (Lights suddenly shut off. Sit in darkness for a few seconds. Flashlight turns on and flashes in your face. Cover some of the light with your hand.) Aiden? What’re you doing kid- (Cut off your sentence as you hear heavy breathing and whispering.) Who’s there? Where’s Aiden? (Lights Flicker on and off in steady intervals. The flashlight appears and disappears with the light.) What the…..(Lights shut off once more and you hear the breathing and a disturbing noise. Begin to run out of the room and close the door. Hold door close as someone on the other side struggles to open it. Look down and fumble for phone. Begin dialing. Hear window break.) Hello?! Chief?!  Someone or ……. something took my kid. It just broke out my window. I think it must’ve jumped out. I've never seen anything like it. I need officers at my house. Now.....(Few Second Pause) I need help now.. (Start to fall over. Stumble to wall. Hand on wall. Fall to hands and knees. Then fall with cell phone landing in front of camera.)

Scene 2

Detective’s Bedroom. The Chief is sitting in a chair next to the Detective.

DETECTIVE

(Start to sit up slowly from bed. Slowly move head towards the Chief next to you.)

CHIEF

(Have a cell phone up to your ear. Realize that he is waking up out of the corner of your eye. Hold a finger up to the Detective to indicate him to wait. Turn away briefly to finish the conversation.) Yeah, uh huh. I know those were his footprints outside, but I found him here. Passed out. Yeah, he's getting up now. Gotta go. Keep me posted. (Hang up the phone.Turn and smile at the Detective.) Well, well, well. Look who’s finally up.

DETECTIVE

Hey Chief……(Pause.) What are you doing here?(Start to raise voice slightly to indicate concern.)  How long have I been out? What happened? Where’s Aiden?(Start to get up.)

CHIEF

Whoa, whoa. Take it easy, kid.(Put hands on his shoulders and ease him back down to a sitting position.) Just relax. Listen up. I don't know what happened. But I'm trying to find that out too. All we know for sure is that whoever did this broke out through the window and took off into the woods, but we have no idea how he got in. There are no signs of forced entry. Anywhere. (Exhale slowly. Rub eyes. Say in sort of whisper to himself.) I should not even be talking to you about this. It's not even your case.

DETECTIVE

(Stand Quickly) What do you mean (Raise Voice.) 'Not my Case?'

CHIEF

(Hesitate) I'm Sorry Detective. Cases like this are too personal. I hate to say it, but what happened was probably because someone had some sort of vendetta with you. How many people have you put away now? Hundreds? I can't put you out there. Who knows what could happen. Someone is probably trying to draw you out. This was not random. We can handle this one, Detective.

DETECTIVE

(Remain standing.) No way. This is my case. Whether I do it as a detective or as a father. I am doing it.

CHIEF

(Exhale) Fine. If I really can’t stop you. But I need you to do me a favor. Stop by this shrink. I told her what you told me last night. She just wants to run a few tests. That's all, then you can get together with your partner and comb the woods out there. Got it?

DETECTIVE

Got it………...Thanks Chief.

CHIEF

Don’t mention it kid, good luck. (Flash him a half-smile.)

DETECTIVE

(Begin to walk out of the room)

Scene 3

Fade back in as the detective and his partner pull into a house and begin talking about the shrink. As they talk they are exiting the car and heading across the street into the woods.

PARTNER

(Start to exit the car and as the Detective looks at you, start dialogue. And begin to walk towards the woods.) So, what did that shrink say? Are you crazy? I’ve been thinking it for years, she just had the guts to tell you.

DETECTIVE

Funny.(Pause.) But she just kept saying how rare my case was. The whole blacking out thing. She told me that it's unusual for someone without a history of it. She chalked it up to going into shock initially, but it wasn't like that. She said she would analyze the results from the tests she did and get back to me as soon as she could. (As you walk, notice a shimmer on the ground. Partner walk past it. Detective notice it. ) Hey, come here. Look at this. (Look up and gesture to your partner.) Is that.. my radio? (Look in jacket to find the radio gone.)

PARTNER

This is your radio.(Look surprisingly at him.)

DETECTIVE

Yeah, no idea how it got here though. That’s bizarre. I never even noticed I lost it. You think this guy stole it? (Look up at partner after you ask the question.) Look here. There are footprints in the mud.

PARTNER

Yeah....Maybe. That is odd….. (Look at him suspiciously as if you believe he did something wrong. Notice him staring right at you. Shake head quickly as if snapping out of a trance.) Look I'm gonna call this in, check those footprints over there. (Gesture with radio.)

DETECTIVE

Got it. (Get close to the footprints and study them. Hesitate as you realize who’s footprints they are. Slowly position your foot perfectly into the print.) (Follow the footprints.) (Look up at Partner who is talking on his radio.)

PARTNER

Hey, Dispatch. Yeah, we think we have a lead on the guy who took the Detective's kid. (Notice Detective looking at you suddenly.) (Slowly turn around. Detective turns back around to observe the footprints.) Yeah. We found some footprints off in the woods. Copy. We'll be here. Sending my location now.

DETECTIVE

(Leaves rustling noises. Wind blowing hard.) (Look up and around the trees as you start to hear whisperings and ringing again. Hold ears.) Oh.. my God…. my head. (Make quiet grunting noises to suggest pain.) (Pay no attention to Partner as his dialogue continues.)

PARTNER

Hey, what're you doing? Hey! Get off me!

DETECTIVE

(Ringing gets extremely loud and suddenly cuts out as you turn around and realize your partner is gone. Breath very heavily.) Hello?! (Act as if the Monster is right behind you, don’t look back. Begin to run, until you reach the edge of the woods. Stop to breath and look back at the forest still heavily winded. Keep looking until you act as if you are hit in the back of the head.)

Scene 4

Unknown location, the Detective is just waking up from the previous scene’s experience.

DETECTIVE

(Slowly get up in the room. Move head slowly to establish the setting. Suddenly hear radio interference. Notice radio and listen.)

UNKNOWN VOICE

Yeah. Maintain radio silence for as long as possible. He could be listening in…... Almost there. Out.

DETECTIVE

What's going on? Was that…..the Chief? (Hear police siren. Look around.) Oh no…..(Spin around and look as you hear a crash and see the Chief standing on the doorway.)

CHIEF

(Kick door open when given a cue. Look at the Detective standing there. Place your hand on the back of your hip as if you have a weapon.) Detective. Stay where you are and get down on the ground with your hands on your head! (Pause for a few seconds.) Now, Detective!

DETECTIVE

Whoa whoa whoa ..Take it easy. (Stick your hands out in front of you to show that you are not going to try anything.) What's going on?

CHIEF

Don't play dumb Detective just get on the ground! (Slowly begin advancing towards him.)

DETECTIVE

Okay...Okay I'm getting down. Just take it easy. (Hold hands out as he slowly descends. Chief runs towards and you and grabs your hands. He will then flip you on your back to continue dialogue.)

CHIEF

(As you say this flip the Detective so he is sitting upright with his face to you and hold the collar of his shirt.)  Why?! Why did you do it, Detective?

DETECTIVE

(Hear the whisperings and ringing again. More audible this time. "Kill him" in a whisper. Light appear behind the Chief.) Chief look out! (Begin to struggle with the Chief.) Behind you! Behind you!

CHIEF

Detective just calm down. Stay on the ground. Stay down. Don't try anything........Detective! (Start to make sounds that suggest a struggle.)

DETECTIVE

Chief!  Chief!

Scene 5

Detective is waking up from the last scene’s struggle to the phone ringing.

DETECTIVE

( Wake up as the phone rings. Slowly get up until the phone goes to voicemail. Do not answer the phone. Listen to the voicemail.)

PSYCHOLOGIST

I must speak with you right away, Detective. This is Dr. Barnes. The test results have come back. You have an extremely rare case of sudden-onset Dissociative Identity Disorder. It's imperative that you come to the office. I believe your…uhmmm….. 'other personality' can cause you to become erratic, unpredictable and even violent. Please. If you receive this message---- (Cut off by Detective pressing the end button.)

‘OTHER’ DETECTIVE

(End the call prematurely. Whispering begins to return louder than ever. The ringing noise gets louder and louder as the camera zooms in on the Detective’s face as he forms a smirk. Ringing noise so loud almost unbearable. The lights suddenly cut off. Growling noise subtle. Speak in a more sinister voice.) Hmph……...It’s great to be back! (Speak softly to yourself) For good this time. (Footsteps sound as the screen is still black, Door opening and closing.)
