Masking It

I thought that I had found it,

a place where I could ditch the mask,

well, there we have it, more fool me,

it was too much to ask.

"Don’t be so depressing,

no one wants to know,

stop wallowing in misery

or maybe you should go."

The mistake, well it was surely mine,

I went and breached a wall,

balanced on the top of it,

toppled into fall.

So I’ll put the mask back on again,

pretend that things are fine,

not let on about the hole

of life that’s really mine.

I’ll put them both behind me,

depression on my right,

despair is on the left of me

both hidden out of sight.

I’ll be what you really want,

I’ll pretend and I will lie;

my true self buried deep within

where it’s allowed to fly.

The mask is back to being worn,

it’s firmly now in place.

I’ll ensure it stays there

and you never see my face.
