Hard To Believe
They used to say that this was the land of the free,
but it’s getting harder now for me to see
why they would choose to use me as symbol
when it’s hard now to navigate, have to be nimble.
All the obstructions, the discriminatory laws,
the way that they’ll exploit any small clause;
a lot that I see now, I’ve come to despise,
with power-hungry bigotry backing the lies.
I stretch out my wings, preening a feather
trying to comprehend, understand whether
I should take to the air and away I should fly --
getting to this stage, I just don’t know why.
No more what it was, cannot claim to be free,
I’m thinking this country’s no longer for me.

Right on, Hull!
It's funny how people assume a country is a democracy because it calls itself such, and because it used to be once upon a time. Same as people assume a country is a first-world country because it is well developed, regardless of its weak infrastructure. But that's the power of national pride and propaganda. We're conditioned to love our country, otherwise it's unpatriotic.
Very well done, Hully.
I'm going to admit that this was very much picture-inspired. I'd not planned on writing anything remotely political but the look on that eagle's face -- so perplexed -- I had to come up with something. And it's what I see happening everywhere, not just in the US.
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Jeff.
In what way are we less free than before Trump got elected?
