“What's to be done then... ?” The women assembled in Lorenzia's parlour exchanged glances, this wasn't the prenuptial gathering they'd bargained for. The soft chink of a bone china teacup broke the silence.

“One assumes your girl has tried fasting your corset tighter, naturally?” Roberta barely gave pause before continuing. “And Dr. Braun's Wonder Tonic hasn't shifted the weight?” she arched her eyes at the bride to be. Lorenzia gave a sorry shake of the head.

“There's an advert in here for Tapeworm larvae. The little beastie sits in your stomach and eats all your leftovers.” Alice replaced the newspaper and gave a triumphant smile, confident she'd solved the problem.

“Good heavens, no!” Lorenzia wrinkled her face and gave a little shudder.

“Well, that's settled then, ladies. Roberta if you'd accompany me to your Father's office, and we'll all meet again next week to discuss the flowers, yes?”

The ladies poured out onto the cobbles and took in the London air. Alice leaned in towards Roberta and began to whisper.

“It's shocking the lengths a girl will go to these days, just to look good in her wedding photographs.”

“I know, dear,” Roberta replied in hushed tones, “but they're such a novelty.”
