My Shiny Quarter

Assigned seats, big yellow busses, and bossy teachers middle school. Yes middle school, a great lasting memory for some and a nightmare no one wants to relive for others. Middle school was the definition of a drag. It was like pouring out a bowl of cereal and finding out you have no milk left. Although sometimes it was like finding a shiny quarter on the floor.
My name’s Jennie and I’m leaving the 8th grade soon. Fun fact about me is that I quite enjoy school, I love studying Math, English, Science and Nick. Ahh Nick, he was my shiny quarter, such eyecandy, a look at his face turned my grey days into sunny days real quick.  He was my dream boy next door, considering he lived about a block down from my house since I was 6. We’ve been zoned to the same schools since then, but it all started in second grade when he gave me a brace Valentine’s Day. Of course, he did give toys to the rest of our home room, but he gave ME the bracelet that I still proudly wear to this day. It's a blue and white beaded bracelet with the pinchy string but I don't mind, because one day when were married, we’ll look back on how sweet the gesture was.
Getting ready to leave the 8th grade I was ready to make a move if i wanted to go steady with Nick, because so far the only conversation I got outta him was “hey can I borrow a pencil?” and I would go “of course” knowing I always had a Nick-only-pencil case in my backpack. I’ve always thought maybe he’s shy or I just make him nervous. But one Friday during dismissal, I found a note in my locker, which was a badly folded piece of notebook paper that read, “hey Jen will you be my end of the year dance date? signed Nick.” I figured this note was Nick’s way of asking me to the dance, because it was so cute I wanted to cry and scream all at the same time. The end of the year dance is an annual dance my school holds for all the 8th graders ready to move on to adulthood AKA high school. Anyone who's everyone goes unless you live under a rock. And this year i couldn't believe i Jennie Margot Wilbert was going with Nick. That weekend I went out and bought the cutest baby blue dress, sparkly on the top and fluffy on the bottom, I got my nails done mani and pedi, and of course my cinderella shoes for the night. On Sunday night when I came home I called my best friend Jennifer and told her everything, I always told and did everything with Jennifer. We even started sharing lockers this year. In all she's been my best friend as long as Nick was living down the block from me.  I mean we were J and J Jennie and Jennifer, friends for life.
Or so I thought, or so I thought we were best friends until I found out on that same phone call that my shiny quarter my end of the year dance date wasn't trying to take the beautiful wonderful Jennie Margot Wilbert to the dance he was trying to take Jennifer Rodriguez. She told me her and Nick have been talking on the phone a lot lately, but last I knew he told me he didn't have one!! and as for the note he told flabby gabby to slip it in Jenifa's locker not knowing it was OUR Locker. That night was the end of J&J, also crushing my dance date dreams. This is why i hate middle school.
That following friday I was forced to go to the dance and watch Jennifer snuggle up on trashy Nick, while i was on the corned thinking it’s over for everyone once i ditch the ugly betty look. Finally closing the middle school chapter in my life it was summer; I was ready for high school, already catching my eye was the new boy across the street… maybe he’ll need some pencils.
