How will you ever stop mass shootings while this attitude persists?

Come Of Age

Hey, now, look I’ve come of age, I’m gonna get a gun,

and I don’t mean a small one – it’s gonna be such fun.

I’ll take it out in to the fields, blast away those cans,

and maybe bag a rabbit, or a deer to fill those pans.

And there I’ll spend some hours practising my shot,

soon it’s second nature, and I am smokin’ hot.

Back home and in my garden, the neighbour’s cat I spy,

I’d told her to keep it away and now it’s gonna die.

I’ve come of age and I’m no kid, no mam, I’m a man,

and I will bear a weapon now simply ‘cause I can.

I need it for protection, the world is full of thieving scum,

if they target my house, well they’d wish that they’d not come.

I’ve bullets now, aplenty, don’t need to be too sparse,

any opportunity I don’t need to let it pass.

And if there’s been something in my past, that went and caused me pain

it might well be I’ll take that gun and go there once again.

Perhaps a bit of payback – well, hell, it might make me feel better

they should have seen the future then there would not be a debtor.

There’s no point crying about spilt blood, I didn’t make the law,

I just went and got my gun for that is what they’re for!

You've hit the nail so hard on the head it might as well be a bullet! Excellently done, Hully! This sums it up. Is gun culture really a culture or a means to eradicate culture? I honestly do not know why the lobbying system is allowed in any country. That's where all problems begin and it's where they fester.

Mike and I wrote a collaborative poem which someone took offense to, it being anti-gun. Now that kind of made me mad so this was my reply. How many people have to lose their lives because of some people's insistence on the 'right to bear arms'?
Thanks so much for reading, Jeff.

Perfect, Hull!

Thank you, Mike! I'm glad you thought it worked out well!

This is insightful, Hully. This last school shooting happened in my neighborhood and it's just devastating. Excellent poem.

Thanks, jaylisbeth. In answer to a pro-gun post.

There will always be Americans who will take offence when someone "attacks" their amendment rights. The idea of limiting the types of guns they can purchase is absolutely ridiculous and appalling! It's what the government wants - an unarmed country! How will people stop the next mass shooting if they can't bear arms? (Because so many mass shootings have been stopped by someone who had a gun on them). What about militias? Without the right to bear arms, they'll just be a bunch of beer-bellied, ATV riding hicks without a means to protect their neighbours and shoot defenseless wildlife!
*eye roll*
I'll never understand the popular American mindset and I'm happy I never will.

This is an incredible poem, Hully. Yet again, innocent lives lost to a lone wolf shooter. He even posted a Youtube video, which told of his intention to become a 'school shooter'. Words fail me... its time for reform.

And Mike and myself, but especially Mike, are being criticized for speaking out. Thanks for reading, Sue!

Quite so Mama Hullabaloo and I too have been in the firing line of the gun lobby. It's tattooed onto their brain or something. However the US is the US and where I sit I'm not afraid of my neighbor. If everyone in the country has a firearm, it's a recipe for disaster. Usianguke

Thanks, Moa. I'm glad to know we are not alone in this. Maybe more on this later in as essay.
