I remember this as clear as day, like it happened yesterday.

When I was about 3 years old I was sitting in my living room playing with some toys. My brothers and sister were older than me and they were off at school and so it was just my mother and myself in the house at the time.

There was a knock on the front door so I got up and went to the window next to the door and looked out. There was a man standing there in uniform with a huge duffel bag next to him. He saw me looking out the window and smiled and asked if my mother was home. I was too short and too young to open the door and of course my mother never wanted me opening the door to strangers.

Anyways about that time my mother walks into the room and she asked me who was there. I said “I think its the mailman” or something to that effect, because I didn't know who it was at that point.

My mother opens up the door and she gets this strange look on her face. She smiles broadly at the man and they rush at each other, hugging and kissing.

Now mind you, I'm three at the time and I'm thinking “Why is momma kissing the mailman?” I remember thinking that. Like, what is going on here? ? ?

After a moment she pulls out of the embrace and they both look at me and smile and she tells me “This is your father” and I look up at him all surprised because I didn't know who he was. My father had been in the Air Force and overseas up until this point and I didn't know him or who he was until this day.

( He of course was there at my birth but then he got deployed over seas and I was too young to remember who he was or anything apparently.)

To this day I still remember this little silly memory. “Why is momma kissing the mailman?” It still makes me laugh when I think about it. I guess we all have those little snippets of memory that seep into our minds that make us laugh. This one certainly does. Even after all these years. Every once in a while I'll see a mail carrier carrying a big bag of mail and it makes me think back to this memory.
