A Police State?

By suggesting that people with certain mental health conditions should not be able to carry arms in an effort to reduce school shootings, it seems that some people now believe that I support a police state. Anybody that has been following my writing would know that nothing could be further from the truth. I’ll point you towards ‘Dekka2’ for instance.

A police state, a government state, armies on the streets; that is an abhorrent scenario to me. But then again, so too is rule by the individuals that have managed to amass the most powerful weapons, the biggest stock of ammunition, no matter who they might be.

It would certainly be true that wearing a uniform, be it of a police officer or a soldier, is no indication that the person is free from mental health issues. I don’t have documentary evidence to support this but I’m sure that anyone who cares can find it easily enough. It also occurred to me on re-reading that I am being both bigoted and biased by suggesting such a thing. After all, aren’t those who are paranoid, who have been victimised, mentally tortured, entitled to stand up for themselves. They would certainly believe so and who am I to suggest otherwise.

I don’t know the answer, but hey, nobody else does either. Perhaps there is a world-wide solution though – but it must be global. Make everybody entitled to bear arms on reaching an agreed age; for the sake of argument say 16 years of age. No, not grant entitlement but make it compulsory. On that day they should receive an identical weapon, an identical amount of ammunition. Look how many problems we could solve – over-crowding, homelessness, school and health-care shortages to name a few. Because one thing nobody can deny is the human trait to kill each other, whatever their stated reason. After all, isn’t that human nature.
