Ball Of String

I thought I’d go out walking,

I took a ball of string,

so if I should go and lose my way,

to home it would me bring.

It started off so perfectly,

the string, it did unwind;

no matter where I wandered to

my home I could then find.

But then things started going wrong,

the string began to twist,

I’d end up going backwards

searching for a path I’d missed.

The twists turned in to tangles,

to unravel them I’d try,

but for each I teased right out

I really wondered why.

The knots, well, they grew bigger,

I was unable to unravel;

I’d have to give up on the string

if I was going to travel.

And then I set to thinking,

I had no home to find

for really now the truth is

that I live inside my mind.

I’ll place this string down on the path

in case someone is in need;

it matters not where I do go

so I will just proceed.
