Fade in:

  1. Bedroom, Morning

 

YOUNG WOMAN SITTING ON EDGE OF BED. HER DEMEANOR IMPLIES THAT SHE IS ABSENT, QUIET, REFLECTING ON A SINGLE THOUGHT. LITTLE ELSE IS READ FROM HER FACE, ALTHOUGH HER APPEARANCE SUGGESTS SHE HAS NOT LEFT THE HOUSE IN SOME TIME. HER NAME IS AVERIE.

 

AVERIE CROSSES TO THE WINDOW, AND LOOKS DEEPLY INTO THE WORLD OUTSIDE. THROUGH A TRANSITION THE AUDIENCE SEES A FOREST, A DISTINCT PALE HAZE FILTERING.

 

INTO THE SHOT ENTERS TWO FIGURES, ONE IS HOODED, AND THEIR FACE IS NOT SEEN. THE OTHER IS AVERIE, WHO LOOKS YOUNGER. THIS COULD BE A TRICK OF THE IMAGERY, HOWEVER, AS AVERIE IS ABOUT THE SAME AGE AS SHE IS IN THE OPENING.

 

THE SOUND OF TRUDGING AND TWIGS, LEAVES CRACKING IS HEARD, AND AN INDISTINCT HUMMING, MUTTERS AS IF SOMEONE IS SPEAKING.

 

AHEAD THE SHOT REVEALS A FORK, ONE WITH TWO PATHS. ONE IS HEAVILY TRODDEN, SHOWING SIGNS OF FREQUENT USE. A SIGN AHEAD SUPPORTS THIS SENTIMENT. THE OTHER IS THiCC WITH UNDERBRUSH, AND MAY HAVE ONCE BEEN AN ALTERNATIVE. HOWEVER, IT LEADS SOMEWHERE DEEPER, AND A SHADOW PREVENTS THE AUDIENCE FROM LOOKING FURTHER THAN A FEW YARDS.

 

MORE MUTTERING IS HEARD, THE SOURCE BEING AVERIE AND THE FIGURE. THEY SEEM TO BE ARGUING. WITH A START, THE FIGURE POINTS, AND BEGINS WALKING DOWN THE UNDEFINED PATH. AVERIE FOLLOWS, APPREHENSIVE.

 

IN THE NEXT SHOT, AVERIE STEPS OUT OF HER ROOM, AND, AS SHE DOES, A HOUSE PHONE RINGS; HOWEVER, AVERIE NEVER PICKS IT UP, INSTEAD LISTENING AND WAITING FOR IT TO GO TO VOICEMAIL. THE RECEIVER IS HEARD, AND A ANOTHER VOICE IS HEARD.



 

DANN

Hey, Averie, hi. How are ya? Anyways, I’ll be around, say, soon, right? Just getting the equipment ready. Alright, float on. See ya soon.

 

THE VOICEMAIL ENDS

 

AVERIE WALKS UP THE STAIRS, AND FUMBLES WITH THE DOOR FOR SUPPORT, ACCIDENTALLY LEAVING IT AJAR AS SHE DOES SO

 

2. Hallway, Midday

A ZOLLY (?) SHOT INDICATES THE HOUSE IS QUIET, WITH THE FRONT DOOR STILL AJAR

 

IN THROUGH THE DOOR ARE A PAIR OF LEGS THAT STOP ONCE OVER THE THRESHOLD. WITHOUT A SOUND, THEY WALK DOWNSTAIRS, IN THROUGH AVERIE’S BEDROOM DOOR, AND SHAKE HER AWAKE

 

Averie

(Groggy)

Wh...what’s going on?

 

A VOICE, A WHISPERING TINGLE DESPITE THE VOICE SPEAKING OUT LOUD

 

Dann

Averie, hi. Sorry for bothering, but I saw the front door open, I figured I’d just come in. That was what you said, at least.

 

AVERIE NONCHALANTLY AGREES

AVERIE APPEARS NERVOUS

Averie

(Echo-y?)

Well, is there another way we can go around?

No, this is the only way, the way it has to be.

AVERIE IS STILL NODDING HER HEAD

I’m glad you agree.

 

DANN LEAVES THROUGH THE OPEN DOOR, ALTHOUGH AVERIE HARDLY NOTICES. INSTEAD SHE IS STARING DOWN A LONG HALLWAY, ONE THAT QUICKLY BECOMES A FOREST OF CROPPED SHRUB AND LEANING BRANCHES, AND MATERIALIZES INTO A SINGLE ROSE

 

3. Exterior, Afternoon

AVERIE IS WEARING A DRESS AND HAS A PAIR OF CUTTERS IN HER HAND. DANN IS SUGGESTED TO HAVE A CAMERA IN HIS HAND, AS A FLASH IS SEEN. HOWEVER, A 360 PAN SUGGESTS THAT AVERIE IS ALONE; HOWEVER…

 

Dann

It looks nice, but the story is a little transparent. Ooh, Averie, uh, your finger is bleeding…

 

AVERIE HARDLY NOTICES AS THE CUTTERS GRAZE HER RING FINGER, LEAVING A SMALL GASH. BLOOD WELLS OUT, ALTHOUGH AVERIE MERELY STARES AT HER FINGER

 

Dann

You know, you seem out of sorts today. Should we call it a wrap?

 

AVERIE REGAINS HER SENSES AS THE LATE EVENING LOOMS. THE SKY IS DIMMING, AND SHE IS FACING A HOUSE THAT SEEMS TO SHRINK WITH EVERY STEP SHE TAKES.

 

Averie

No. I’ve been here before.

ANOTHER FLASH, AND DANN IS IN FOCUS THIS TIME, MOUTHING:


 

Dann

Tell it to me from the beginning.

 

4. Home, Evening

 

POV THROUGH THE DOOR AS AVERIE IS SPRAWLED OUT ON A COUCH, IN A STATE OF SLEEP, EXCEPT HER EYES ARE OPEN, TRACING INFINITY SYMBOLS ON THE CEILING.

 

A SOUND LIKE KNOCKING IS HEARD AS AVERIE CONTINUES TO TRACE, AND A SLOW PAN ON THE CEILING EVENTUALLY BECOMES THE THRESHOLD OF A DIFFERENT HOUSE, ONE THAT FEELS OLD AND UNUSED, AND IS FRACTURED BY THE SAME HAZE THAT SUGGESTS THAT THIS IS NOT THE PRESENT

 

AVERIE AND THE FIGURE CREEP ALONG, FEELING THEIR WAY ALONG THE WALLS, AND OCCASIONALLY TRIPPING UP IN THE DARK.

 

AVERIE REACHES OUT TOWARDS THE CEILING, AS IF TO GRASP SOMETHING BEFORE IT IS FOREVER OUT OF HER REALITY.

 

Averie

Dann?

 

AVERIE IS STILL REACHING, FEARFULLY, FOR SOMETHING, BUT STUMBLES HERSELF. THE THUD ECHOES IN THE HOUSE, AND WINDCHIMES RING, ALTHOUGH NO BREEZE IS FELT.

 

SOMEONE HAS DRAWN COVERS OVER AVERIE, BUT SHE IS SHIVERING. STRUGGLING TO KICK OUT FROM UNDER THE COVERS, SHE FINDS SHE CANNOT GET OUT.

 

AVERIE IS IN A DREAM NOW. AROUND HER, LIGHTS SLOWLY COME UP ON THE HOUSE AS THE HALLWAY IS LIT, ALLOWING AVERIE TO FIND HER WAY.

ALL THE TIME, SHE IS STILL CALLING OUT DANN’S NAME

 

HER PACE QUICKENS, AND SO DOES HER HEARTBEAT, MOVING IN TIME WITH THE FOOTSTEPS. THE HALL BEHIND HER GOES DARK AS SHE REACHES THE FINAL DOOR. WITH A GREAT EFFORT, SHE PUSHES IT OPEN, AS THE COVERS FLY OFF OF HER HEAD.

5. Somewhere, Sometime

AVERIE, VISIBLY SHOCKED, FINDS HERSELF SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN HER BEDROOM. AN EFFECT MAKES HER SEEM LARGER IN A TIGHT SPACE, ALMOST SUFFOCATING. THE AIR CRAWLS WITH A HEAVY NOTHINGNESS, THE SAME AS WHEN AVERIE FOUND HERSELF IN THE TRUE PAST.

Shaky cam?

AVERIE, ONCE STUMBLING OUT OF HER ROOM, HEARS SOMETHING FALL. RECOGNITION IN HER FACE INDICATES THAT IT IS EERILY SIMILAR. SHE FINDS HER WAY TO THE SAME DOOR, BUT INSTEAD OF STRUGGLING, FINDS IT AJAR. PUSHING IT EVER SO SLIGHTLY, AVERIE GIVES A YELP AS HER FOOT HITS SOMETHING SOLID ON THE GROUND.  

 

A SHARP RELIEF IS THROWN ACROSS THE FRAME, AND DANN’S FACE COMES INTO FOCUS. HE IS DEAD, AND AS AVERIE STARES INTO THE BLANK SHUTTERS THAT WERE ONCE EYES, HER OWN MIND RUSHES, AND A QUICK FLASH OF PREVIOUS SCENES SEES AVERIE ALONE IN SCENES THAT FEATURED THEM TOGETHER.

 

DARKNESS CLOUTS AVERIE’S VISION, AND SHE FALLS...BACK ONTO A BED. SHE IS IN A HOSPITAL...OR IS SHE??? THEN, SLOW ZOOM ON AVERIE INTERSPERSED WITH FRAMES OF PREVIOUS SHOTS
