The Background

Criminal networks defraud lonely people around the world with false promises of love and romance. Modern online romance scams are premeditated, organized crimes that steal millions ? potentially billions ? of dollars from vulnerable, lonely people over the internet. The scammers may just have hit upon the perfect crime: They sit at computers safely overseas, hunting for their prey on social networks, and they rarely get caught. The victims are often left deeply damaged ? both financially and psychologically ? and so embarrassed that they’re reluctant to come forward even when they realize they’ve been scammed.

The Premise

A character-driven drama set in the pulsating enigma of modern day Mumbai/Kolkata. Coming out of a terrible divorce, Nisha has lost all sense of passion and all sense of life. She has become an empty shell of her former self. Though still working as an arts curator, it seems every other aspect of her life has changed. She appears determined to spend more time with her children who are living with her ex-husband and tries to put the pieces of her life back together. Her friends advise her on starting a new life and help her create an online dating profile. One day she receives an invitation on her email from a person named Sinclair Gregor, a Chemical Engineer with a multinational who has a son named Kevin. He compliments her on her looks, which he came across while looking for a friend who shares a common surname as that of Nisha.  The missive caught her eye because of the sender’s handsome profile photo, which showed a middle-aged man with a ruddy face, strong black eyebrows, and a welcoming gaze. Anxious about her future as an older single woman, Nisha lapped up the kind words about her looks and started responded to him. Soon they were chatting online for more than 12 hours a day. Her relationship with Sinclair blossoms and they develop romantic feelings for each other.

The Nemesis

Nisha grows fonder to Sinclair and Kevin both. Sinclair decides to visit her. He talks about his company investing in buying chemical equipment in India and since his bank has frozen his account for the time being he asks Nisha for some financial help. Sinclair sends his friend to Nisha’s house to pick up the cash and she obliges. The second time he asks for flight tickets for Kevin, so she deposits the amount in his account. By the time she realizes that she has been duped by Sinclair, it’s already too late. She has sold her car to pay medical expenses for Kevin, she has cut down on going out with friends so she could send him enough money to reach her. She feels too embarrassed to contact the police. The problem is that everything she’s doing to make herself happier is either very self-destructive or extremely psychologically damaging or will end up leaving her more broken than she was before. Her world crumbles and she must learn to stand on her two feet again.

The Hero and the twist – The hunter becomes the hunted

Determined to find the man who duped her, she decides to track down Sinclair. She talks to some of the victims who have been cheated of their money but hesitate to come forward to register their complaints. With the help of some of her friends she finally lands in West Africa and tracks him down. She finds out that Sinclair is actually a 23 year old drop-out student from Nigeria, calls himself Chetachi. He shows her how the entire network works and tells her that he is just a pawn in this global crime syndicate. She decides to help him get away from the clutches of his gang members.  Her love for him turns into friendship and with the help of international police and anti-fraud agency she helps in nabbing the head of the network. She continues to rehabilitate the youth through international grants, she manages to organise events and raise funds, give speeches and seminars and sponsor Chetachi’s education. She is now happy and content in life because of this new found purpose and continues to have a healthy relationship with her children.
