Beneath The Surface

Dragged beneath the surface,

weighted with a stone,

it’s like I am held under by

some force not overthrown.

But I’m not about to give in,

I don’t want to concede;

it’s going to be some mighty strain

but I may as well proceed.

I’ll struggle with this knotted rope,

fingers fumbling to undo,

for it’s that which does now hold me

to this stone like a strong glue.

The cord begins to loosen

I don’t need it to untie,

I struggle still to hold my breath

or else I’ll surely die.

I slip free with one ankle,

then the other one is free,

I’m heading for the surface now,

there’s nothing holding me.

Bedraggled and worn out from

some exertion with the deep,

I need a moment’s respite

while I lay there in a heap.

This time I’ve made good my escape,

I wear the victor’s crown

but some day that rope won’t come free

and on that day I’ll drown.
