Left, Right, Left, Right, America’s Political Scandals March On!

Note: The historical facts used in this essay are based upon information in Wikipedia

The factual information is based upon what I believe to be reliable news sources

Political scandals in the United States are very common, but each one is portrayed in the news media as if the world, or at a minimum America, is coming to an end. It is not and it will not. We have survived 228 years of them to date.

The first one occurred during George Washington’s administration. William Blount conspired with Great Britain to seize the Spanish-controlled Louisiana. When the conspiracy was uncovered in 1797, he was expelled from the Senate, and became the first federal official to face impeachment. From that time forward, only nine of the forty five presidents have had scandal free administrations, the last one being Benjamin Harrison in 1893. Every administration in the past 124 years has had at least one! I am writing about an Executive Branch scandal that caused a loss or damage to a reputation that was caused by an actual or apparent violation of morality or propriety, not a social scandal. Let’s examine how these previous scandals compare to the hysterical reportage of the Trump administration’s wrongdoings. After more than a year of investigation by a special council here is what has been determined: a foreign policy advisor and a national security advisor lied to the FBI. The president was suspected of collusion, but no proof of that has been found, and it is not a crime. Let’s compare that to the major Executive branch scandals of recent years.

The Obama administration (Democratic left):

1.The director of the office of personal management resigned after the theft of data concerning 22 million people

2.The Secretary of Stated deleted more than 33,000 emails on her private server

3.The IRS admitted to inappropriate investigation of conservative political groups, the responsible official took the 5th amendment when being interviewed by congress

4.The Attorney General was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to release documents about  gun walking

5.An appointee to the National labor Relations Board resigned amid accusations of leaking information to the National Association of Manufacturers

6.The head of the General Services Administration resigned after spending $822,000 for a 4 day training conference

The George Bush administration (Republican right):

1.The Secretary of the Army resigned over substandard conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center

2.The Special Assistant for Intergovernmental Affairs resigned because of his misuse of grant money.

3.The head the United States Office of Special Counsel pleaded guilty to criminal contempt of Congress.

4.The Chief of Staff to the Vice President was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice

5.The chairman of the Federal Housing Finance  pleaded guilty to lying to congress

6.The Principal Deputy Undersecretary of the Air Force pleaded guilty to inflating the price of contracts

The Bill Clinton Administration (Democratic left):

1.The President was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice. He was also cited for contempt of court and had a 5 years suspension of his law license.

2.The chief of staff to the Secretary of Agriculture was sentenced to 27 months for perjury

The George H.W. Bush administration: (Republican right):

1.The President denied knowledge of  the “Iran-Contra” affair, although his diary stated that he knew about it

2. The Treasurer of the United States pled guilty to tax evasion and was sent to prison

3. The President granted clemency to six high ranking government officials

 Ronald Reagan administration: (Republican right):

1.The Assistant Secretary of the Navy accepted bribes and was sent to prison for 4 years

2.His replacement was found guilty of accepting an illegal gratuity and theft

3.The Secretary of the Interior was sentenced to 5 years in prison for obstruction of justice and perjury

4.Armaments were illegally sold to Iran and the money was diverted to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua

5.The Secretary of Defense was indicted on two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice

6.The Deputy Chief of Staff pled guilty to perjury and was sentenced to three years of probation

I could go on, but it would just be more of the same type of offenses (bribery, theft, perjury and so forth). However, Watergate under President Nixon was unique. The president resigned rather than face impeachment for covering up a burglary! Yes, that was his terrible misdeed. In today’s world it would not even merit a slap on the wrist, especially if had been a Democratic president, at the time it received the absolute maximum media coverage.

This is today’s political world. A president has been investigated by a special council for more than a year for something that isn’t a crime! Meanwhile, persons for whom there is overwhelming evidence of them being involved in illegal activities are walking around free. Here is an outline of their known activities according to a report from the House Intelligence Committee.

1.In 2016 The FBI got a warrant to spy upon a man (Page) who a year later becomes a volunteer advisor in the president’s campaign. The evidence they present to the FISA court is based upon a dossier paid for by the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign, but they did not tell the court that. The head of the FBI told a Senate committee that it was “salacious and unverified” in June of 2017. The report said that the FBI misled the FISA court about the dossier! The application does not mention that the author was ultimately working on behalf of, and was paid by, the DNC and Clinton campaign, or that the FBI had separately authorized payment to him for the same information.

2.. The deputy attorney general approved three renewals of the warrant knowing that it was based upon unverified information.  The director of the FBI signed them knowing that they were based upon, “salacious and unverified” information. The wiretapping continued based upon a dossier whose later verification was based upon information given to Yahoo news by the author of the dossier, and who has been proven to have lied to the FBI.

3.Before and after the author was terminated as a source by the FBI, he maintained contact with the Associate Deputy Attorney General, a senior DOJ official who worked closely with the Deputy Attorneys General. Shortly after the election, the FBI began interviewing him, documenting his communications with the author. The author told him that he was desperate that the nominee not get elected and passionate about him not becoming president This evidence was not reflected in any of the Page FISA applications. During this same time period, the Deputy Attorney General’s wife was employed to assist in the cultivation of opposition research on candidate Trump.

4.The Deputy Director of the FBI told congress that no surveillance warrant would have been sought without the dossier information.

5.An FBI agent was reassigned by the Special Counsel’s Office to FBI Human Resources for improper text messages with his mistress, who also worked for the FBI. They both demonstrated a clear bias against Trump, whom he had investigate, and in favor of Clinton. The texts also reflect extensive discussions about the investigation, orchestrating leaks to the media, and include a meeting with the Deputy Director to discuss an “insurance” policy against President Trump’s election.

What it amounts to at this time is that the only un-ethical or illegal things done have been done by members of the FB’s top level! However, the FBI has again reopened its investigation of Hillary Clinton and it will likely involve other members of the Obama administrations. This is what has happened:

1.FBI has released proof that her failure to safeguard state secrets caused the secrets to fall into the hands of foreign governments.

2.A major interference with the case occurred when Obama’s Attorney General agreed to meet privately with Mrs. Clinton’s husband, who is also the subject of an FBI criminal investigation.

3.A week later, the FBI announced that it had found nothing among the 650,000 emails recovered from a lap top computer that would cause it to reopen the Clinton case, and it closed the case a second time

The FBI now has posted on its website more than 300 emails that Clinton had sent to a person who is believed to be a former advisor. These say that these emails fell into the hands of foreign powers when the advisor was hacked. We have seen scandals from the left and from the right, it is possible that we are about to see one do an about face!
