I am a star that shines in the night…
That dances from dusk ‘til first morning light…
I weave my passage through the space in the sky…
And mark the passing of time as it flies…

I’ve watched you for years, from high above head…
And listened contently to all that you’ve said…
The things you have learnt and all you now know…
I’ve shared in it all as I’ve watched you grow…
The beautiful young girl that you have become…
All that you’ve seen and all that you’ve done…

When you reach for the sharp, and make a fresh scar…
It makes me so mad that I am a star…

I want to leave the dark sky, just for the night…
Come down to Earth and hold you so tight...
Tell you the story of how I once was you…
So tired and sick and exhausted right through…
How I’d spent so much time with a blade in my fist…
Dragged across skin, each time – grave danger missed…
Until the night that I left Earth and I joined the dark sky…
And realised my mistake, as I saw you cry…

How I saw that the news broke you in two…
How I wished I’d have stayed to be here with you…
How I sat up that night and caught all your tears…
How my pleading to come back just fell on deaf ears…
How I saw your pain and how you hid it each day…
How I sent down the rain to wash it away…
How when the rain was defeated, I asked of the sun…
"Please, make her smile"...but it could not be done…
How with that, next, I turned to the wind…
How he blew with all his might but the pain would not rescind…
How at last, in my attempt, I begged of the snow…
But no matter the weather, your pain would not go…

So I roared like the thunder, until silent I fell...
And the stars all around me started to yell...
"We all try it at first, but you'll learn in time...
The best you can do is teach her to shine..."

So I sat in the clouds, watching you grow up…
I held back your hair when you needed to throw up…
I kissed your scraped knees whenever you fell…
I sat with you for hours helping you learn to spell…
I had words with the first boy to take you out on a date…
I reminded him to return with you before it got too late…
We laughed on your birthdays, and when Nan died…
I cuddled you for hours as you sat and cried…
I wished you good luck on your first interview…
I celebrated with you when you got the good news…
I’ve always been there, without a minutes pause…
And you've got so much more coming that you’ve got to live for…
I know the darkness; all too well know the stakes…
But it gets so much brighter when day finally breaks…

Then, before I'd leave again, I'd whisper to you…
A message, since the day I left, I’ve held on to…
Don’t think because I’m not around that means I’ve stopped caring…
I promise, you’re everything and I keep watch on how you’re faring…
Then I'd say my last goodbye and return to my home...
Among a million other stars, all here for their own...
And I plan to stick around, in the sky here, at night…
Just in case you ever need me to make something right…

I’ll be there for the laughs, and when you grieve too…
I may be a star…but I’ll never leave you…

I’ll be here every night, in the sky just above you…
I may be a star…but I’ll always love you…
