On an outdoor rink at Annapolis last night, the Toronto Maple Leafs were outplayed by a determine Washington Capitals squad.

The Capitals defeated the Leafs 5-2.

It was the Leaf's third loss in a row on this road trip.

It is a good thing the Leaf's have secured a playoff spot or Toronto would've been in trouble now.

Evgeny Kuznetsov put the Capitals ahead 1-0 at 3;50 of the first period.

Zach Hyman tied the game at 5:20.

Just 59 seconds later, Alex Ovechkin put Washington ahead again.

Nicklas Backstrom made it 3-1 Capitals at 16:20.

Nazem Kadri closed the gap at 3-2 at 7:22 of the second period.

John Carlson put the Caps. ahead by two goals again at 8:05.

Jakub Vrana made it 5-2 Capitals at 10:49.

Leaf's goalie, Frederik Andersen, was replaced by Curtis McElhinney at 11:10 of the second period.

There was no scoring in the third period, but Toronto out shot Washington 10-4.

At the end of the game, Washington out shot the Leafs 34-29.

Both Kuznetsov and Carlson finished the night with three points.

Toronto travels to Buffalo to face the Sabres tomorrow night.
