Simply Shadowed

She tries to believe the compliments,

she tries to convince herself they’re meant;

maybe they were truly intended

when those comments, they were sent.

But somewhere in the background,

is the sensation she should hide;

when all those mixed up feelings

are let loose and do collide.

Maybe they’re meant sarcastically,

as some part of a cruel joke;

the thoughts of all the laughter --

well, she simply cannot cope.

The ghost of that girl, long gone,

is buried deep inside,

she’s never been able to banish her

no matter how hard she tries.

This girl, her name is Failure

and she never fails to disappoint,

she’s always oh, so eager

to so critically anoint.

She has visions of the laughter,

the jokes made behind a hand,

and any praise is disbelieved

and becomes no more than sand.

Better just accept the truth

that there is zero worth,

than to chance to be just so deceived,

a subject of total mirth.

She’ll shut her ears, and shut her eyes,

continuing to try

to never be more taken in

by some malicious lie.

That ghost will never leave her,

no, she simply seems to thrive;

feeding on inadequacies,

and killing any drive.

A shadow, that’s all she can be,

for any more, too late;

it’s all been eaten by what’s gone before,

the torment and the hate.
