The ocean has always been a part of my life. Family outings often involved the beautiful beaches of Wellsprings and soft calming breeze of the wind. This was the one thing that was ever exciting in this sleepy little town, yet with the barbeque on the many grills out in the picnic areas of the sandy innards of the beaches often more times than not attracted many Tourist. Soon they would come throughout the years coming and going but never really staying they to me always seemed to be missing out on the world’s greatest creation, for I was always there. I was always drawn to the salty cool waves and the tides that always pushes and pulls on you in the sand.  My mother use to say that I was born with gills, often teasing me about my constant pleading to be by the ocean she would say all the time, “Can’t you just enjoy being on land sometimes? You might never get the chance to do it again you know.” But I could never grasps her thoughts on being on land she would’ve much preferred it over swimming deep in the cool blue.

The rare times she would go with me she seemed to be refreshed and full of life, once I brought this up to my father a man who will tell you what’s on his mind no matter what you thought. He said while flipping the burgers over in his “kiss the cook” apron, “You know your mom use to be a swimmer. She would swim for hours on end just floating on the waters.” He continued chuckling “If I didn’t go out and call her name or join her she would stay out there forever.” “But why did she stop?” I asked cutting to the chase in between big bites of my burger.  “Well kiddo she had you.” was all he would tell me while giving me a little pat on the head, but this wouldn’t satisfy my small mind no I needed a better answer. However, I wouldn’t get that answer, because my mother is missing.

That was my thought right now as I stand at the end of the docks that is full of unused boats that have been sitting during the winter. What happened to you? I asked mostly for myself scanning the surrounding beach. For some reason I felt she would be here every day since she went missing I would come here looking, but she was not here. Watching a man fiddle with his boats ropes tying impossible knots to keep it from drifting to far while he worked; happy that the winter weather is now thawing. I hadn’t notice a presences behind me till my father spoke “come on sweetie the temperature is going to drop soon” he took my hand softly and lead me far off the docks. But I could not help but look back for a long while as the waves begin to pick up and crash against the sand and rocks. For this month would be the month I find out about my mother disappearance no matter what.
