“Pattie Kira Jervis hurry up!  This is your first day back and you don’t want to be late.”

Pattie groaned hearing her mom yell from downstairs.  She got out of bed and headed for the bathroom.  Two months off and today was her first day back she was so nervous.  She wasn’t concerned about doing her job, if was how everybody was going to react.

The long drive into the city didn’t help any, but as she parked her car and walked towards her building she made up her mind to just deal with what ever happens.  The guard at the front desk gave her a look when she headed for the doors, but when she produced her key card he smiled and nodded.  The people in the elevator didn’t even give her a second glance.

The first real reaction was from Steve.  He stopped in his tracks as she came in and just stared.  She smiled and chuckled as she headed for her office.  Most of the others just continued to do their work, a few smiled or said hi.

She got into her office and dropped into her chair with a sigh.  Her hands were shaking so bad as she tried to log on that she misspelled her login three times.  Finally, login on she started going through her e-mails, but she needed coffee.

The walk to the office coffee station was like she never left as people wished her good morning, a few asking her to come by later to help with a problem.  She was completely at ease as she made her coffee.

“Hey Peter, nice to have you back.”  Al Martin said as he came into the small kitchenette.

Pattie turned around.  “What did you call me?”

“Chill dude, I just called you Peter.”

“Peter is dead.  I’m Pattie.”

“You may have had it snipped off, but you are still Peter Jervis.”

Pattie squeezed her Styrofoam cup crushing it and scalding her hand.  Her scream drew everybody in the office.  Mr. Wilson the office manager came in.

“What is going on here?  What happen to your hand Pattie?”

“He dead named me.”  Pattie pointed a shaking finger at Al Martin.

“Dead named what the fuck is that?”  Al screamed!

“Didn’t you watch the video you were told to Al?”  Mr. Wilson asked.

“Yeah sure I did.”

“Then you would know what that means.  I think you and me need to have a talk.  Pattie I want you to get your hand checked out.”
