With Instagram filters, my skin looks great
On Twitter, the arguments never do abate
Snapchat indulges my transient whims
Even as the Pinterest collection undergoes rigorous trims
To suit the vagaries of time
On Facebook too, my posts have a way to chime
Oh but where do I find myself for the real me is lost
As I fall through the cracks I lament the cost
I have paid to be loved
Oh what a world it is to have paid to be loved

Is it not a need to be your best
To put yourself to the test
And if you fail, you slip on a mask
Never mind the daunting task
You do it again and wear another
If you are being loved, why bother
Each occasion from sunshine to frost
Is captured to gain approval from those who are similarly lost
Indeed, I pay a price to be loved
Oh what a world it is to have paid to be loved

So who is a friend and who the ardent fan
Who’d merrily comment on your tan
And yet when the need arises is nowhere to be seen
For it can be a mirage, this ‘social media scene’
Maybe it’s time to smell the roses and not just photograph them
Maybe it’s time to yank off the mask and be who you are
Maybe it’s time to realise that the physical world is very much on par
With the charm of the virtual and all that it beholds
So let’s not forget to enjoy its folds
For what a joy it would be to be loved
Oh yes, what a joy it would be to be loved
