Morning Walk

He goes for a walk

To try and stay awake.

Machines wash the gutters of debris,

Of countless cans and bottles.

Drunks still sleep in the alcoves

Of closed shops.

He notices an absence

Of glittering lights, pro's, buskers, the bustle

Of stripjoints, street scenes, fights, drug deals,

The music of the latenight jazz bars, perverts,

Sexshops, cops,

He notices the absence of the night,

Everything is shut,

All the entertainment is dead,

Except for a few birds

Chirping in the morning,

Circling the fountain.
