Teenage Depression in the 21st Century

By Greendoor

Depression has always been a topic of mass debate, many experts claiming it to be due to the current generations need for instant gratification. I am here to say that they are wrong. Many of today’s teens face depression due to the lack of long term gratification they are receiving, couple that with the pure social, political, and mental unrest teens face today depression and suicide will be inevitable.

Today teens in the united states face a very new and almost unavoidable threat, mass school shootings. Since the first mass shooting at Columbine high school there have been 122 students lose their live because of school shootings. What used to be the one place for escape for many troubled teens across the nation school as became yet another personal hell for many. Teens see and hear their fellow classmates being gunned down the mental affects could only be compared to PTSD. The answer that many students are given when they ask how to do I change this how do I live past this is merely to find what makes you happy. I would disagree with that advice. The only thing that can truly help all teens facing depression and suicidal thought is to find what gives you joy. Adults today are focused on what can give the instant gratification hungry generation instant gratification, when what they need is a long-term joy. Stay next to them show them love don’t ask how your day asked how did your week, give them motivation to get through the year not the day. I’m sure you have heard the saying “Take it one day at a time”, well with this generation that is not the answer. We were built upon the notion that there are people in the world out to get us to always check both shoulders before you do, what they need to hear now is I love you and I’m right here with you

As stated by the philosopher Rene Descartes “I think, therefore I am” and that is the case for many teens today they think of only hate and darkness therefore that’s all they can be
