Men Behind Bars

Prisoners

Jibbering on remand,

Faces sculptured by traffic lights,

Exiled from the wavelength

Of skeleton keys,

Weary and pale from drugs.

They scratch their cancer

With fingernails that flake,

Like rust from a chassis,

With modern anaemic eyes

They recall a neon sign,

Flickering, fading out.

The furniture sinks

To the floor of the cell,

Their hands contort

To grasp a windowsill,

In memory of a window

Blotched with religious motifs.
