I looked at him. He looked absent-minded. I smiled at him to cheer him up, he just looked at his hands. He hardly minded the Skittles and the paprika flavoured chips on the table.

Yesterday. He told me he had lost his father. I was afraid he would break if he stayed at his house, so I invited him over. To get his mind on other things.

He had always been such a good friend to me. Supported me when I needed it. Time had absolutely come to return the favour.

He took a green skittle. I took a purple one.

“What should we watch? It’s movie-night after all,” I said, masking my worry.

“I don’t know,” he stared at the table once again.

“Let’s see. What were your favourites again…”

“I just… Let’s just watch one of your favourites,” he muttered.

“Do you like Avatar?” I asked.

“I know you like Up,” he answered.

“What about Cars? It always makes you laugh.”

“I don’t fancy laughing.”

We discussed for a long while, bringing up every DVD that I had. We finally landed on Eragon.

After the movie, he said he was tired, so I drove him home. We had movie nights every weekend after that and he became himself more and more.

One day, I woke up to a knock on the door. I was too lazy to bother to go and look who it was. But when I finally got up and opened the door, I saw a bouquet and a card. I picked up the card and read it.

“Thank you for being a wonderful friend in a tough time like this. I have no idea what I have done to deserve a friend like you. You didn’t give up, even though my mind was clouded by grief. So happy you chose me to be your friend.

Your ‘forever friend’”

I smiled. He had indeed deserved it. In my opinion, no one deserved it more. He would have done the same for me.
