Jack Sprat could eat no fat,

His wife could eat no lean.

And so betwixt the two of them

They licked the platter clean.

Jack and Jean left no remains,

they always ate it all;

but you’ll lose your appetite

if, on them, you call.

So Hard To Keep Good Staff.

“It’s so hard these days, my dear, to keep good staff. So often we find that the companions we employ suddenly miss home, family, friends....It can be very disruptive for my wife and I.” Mr Sprat looked quite sad while he spoke, gave off the air of someone who had often been let down.

Amanda Dawes quickly jumped in with reassurances, she really needed this job. “Well, Mr Sprat...”

“Please, call me Jack.”

“Okay. Well, Jack, I can promise that won’t happen with me. I have no family and no real friends. I’ve not really put down roots anywhere so I’ve got nowhere to go back to.”

Jack Sprat nodded, tapping his pen on his pad. “And you’re sure you would be happy here with myself and Jean, my wife? We would not be expecting you to do a lot of heavy work. Maybe some light housework, cook and serve our meals but mostly you’ll be here to keep us company. In return, we will provide you with self-contained accommodation, all expenses paid. And we’ll give you £100 spending money too.”

£100 was not much money, but how many people were left with that much after paying all their living costs. “Are you offering me the position, Mr. ....err....Jack.”

“Yes, I think I am!”

Amanda smiled. “Thank you so much. I’ll try and be the best companion ever! When would like me to start?”

“There’s no time like the present! Let me take you to meet Jean, and then you can get your belongings and move on in.”

Jack Sprat was a tall, thin man, bordering on cadaverous. His wife, Jean, though was the complete opposite; so obese that she found it hard to move from her chair. But they both seemed pleasant enough, chatty and really quite entertaining.

Yes, Amanda thought, it was a turn of luck when she saw the position advertised.

There was very little work to do, really. Even the shopping was taken care of. The freezer was well-stocked with meals for him and meals for her, all neatly labelled. All Amanda had to do was go to the basement, select a meal for Jack and one for Jean, stick them in the microwave and serve. For herself, she got two half days to go off and buy whatever she wanted to eat at her employers expense.

After a few weeks, the freezer began to go down. “Do you want me to pick something up for you in town?” Amanda asked.

Jack went to inspect the contents of the freezer. “No, no! It will be fine for a while. Thank you for offering to replenish our supplies though.”

Another week went past, and then another. Amanda was having to dig deeper and deeper down in to the freezer. She was leaning over it, reaching down, when she heard the basement door open. “You really will have to stock up,” she called.

“That’s just what I’m here to do,” said Jack, before swinging the axe down on to the back of Amanda’s head.
