Little Jack Horner

Sat in a corner,

Eating his Christmas pie.

He put in his thumb,

Pulled out a plum,

And said, What a good boy am I!

Little Jack Horner

Hid in a corner,

Shaking from head to toe.

He hid from someone

Who had pulled out a gun,

Why they were after him, he did not know!

Gun!

Jack Horner was just going about his usual day in his usual way, when suddenly he found himself being dragged into a situation way out of his control. Gun shots split the air, really close to where he stood. Why would somebody be shooting at him?

None the wiser as to what was going on, Jack ran. There were shouts now, getting louder as they grew nearer. The shooter - or maybe there was more than one? - seemed to be chasing him. It didn’t make sense. He lived a quiet life, a diligent life, and was far from being wealthy. Who could possibly be targeting him?

There! A shaded place, almost behind a large skip. If he could manoeuvre himself into the gap by the wall maybe he could stay hidden until the gunman had passed. He pushed himself up against the cold and rusty metal, his back pressed against the concrete, and tried to quieten his breathing. It was hard when he found himself shaking from his head to his toes.

Panic gripped him as he heard the running footsteps getting nearer and nearer. Would he really be out of view? Jack moved himself further into the shadows, sunk to the ground and held his breath. From there he watched and waited.

Footsteps almost alongside him now, he risked a quick glance. A blond guy, about 5’11”, average weight and wearing pretty common clothing; sweatpants, topped off with a hoodie, high-top sneakers. Not a lot of a description to pass on to the police, but better than nothing.

Most important to Jack was his certainty that he’d never seen the guy before. And that meant he couldn’t have been the target, surely? Keeping hidden until the gunman disappeared around the corner, Jack stepped out from the shadows and took his phone from his pocket. Shakily he began to press 911.

Before he had pressed the final 1, he froze. A gun was pointed directly at him. She was small, slight, he’d not heard her approach, but he had no doubt from her expression that she was perfectly prepared to fire.

What....what do you want from me? I’ll give you my money, my phone....”

You, we never wanted anything from you. But now you’ve seen too much and we need your silence.” She had a slight accent but he could not identify it.

I’ll not say anything. I promise!”

Not good enough, I’m afraid,” she said, and pulled the trigger.
